Even enlisted men who had t;ood records as farmers have been I eturned to their farms in the effort to make the crop of 1917 a bumper 'n "the bread basket of Britain." More field work by women will be done. KesideTife on a farm as a "hand" will be accepted as residence duties cn the homestead under the plan adopted and moreover the term required has been reduced from three to practically two years only. The settlement of the region in Northern Ontario opened by the Canadian Government railways, as well as in the western provinces where the Grand Trunk Pacific is now running: to the Pacific coast will be hastened by the new premium for farm labor.

The Ontario Department of Lands. Forests and Mines proposes to spend a million dollars on a community farm settlement project with the object of providing directly for the returned soldiers. The desirability for agricultural purposes of the land in the great clay belt of Temiskaming and Northern Ontario, was recogniied some years ago when the Ontario Government undertook a huge road-building program. The scheme calls for the purchase of a block twelve miles square, with community buildings in the center in which the colonists may live until they feel themselves fitted to take up land in adjoining sections. At first they will earn a living clearirrg the central 200 to 300 acres for a demonstration farm which will be stocked by the government and from which the soldiers may purchase on easy terms, stock for their farms.

It is said. too, that the Governor, as a natter of military necessity, rould seize th coal mines of the stale aul operate hem. if the owners refuse or fail to -upply coal to th state. There are paid. also, to be other nethods of reaching the situation. There is a serious coat shortage in Iridina. Many dealers have, empty tins in heir yards. They are filling only about :r per cent of their orders, end this at he season of the year -when the demand

is smallest. It is said that thousands of tons of coal 13 at the mines awaiting shipment, while the mines are not being worked more than a part of their capacity. Coal operators say there is a car shortage, but it is understood that the Governor will not accept this as an excuse if the shortage is allowed to continue. It has been proposed that the roming special session of the legislature enact. a law giving the Govrenor authority to take over coal mines in the name of the state whenever it is necessary to relieve the public, but the Governor says such a law is not needed, and that he already has all the authority needed to handle the situation through the public service commission.

Attorney Kobert Emmet O'Connor of Gary, says he isn't the Attorneq O'Connor who was injured by a fall down the pteps in the Security building a few evenirgs ago. Mr. O'Connor says that friends call on him, call him up and write to him; that flowers have b- ei coming to his home; that vendors of snake oils and llnements pester him; that well wishers with voodoo remedies pursue him all with a purpose of mending bones and ligaments he has neither broken nor trained.
