RUBBERS Something dreadful has happened to rubbers. They used to climb all over man's teet and humiliate him terribly. T ne spread themselves around at an awful rate, unashamed. But here lately they've grown reticent. They seem to have suffered qualms. They hide on the bottom of men's feet and cling delicately to the soles of his shoes, as nearly out of sight as possible. What is the matter, do yrr suppose? Can it be that aftriding man's instep since ,f'immemorial rubbers dec il they had no business there an go off ? It looks like it.

One billion dollars cred.t for France, without interest with unlimited time for payment, i.- the sukpestion pourine into Washing-ton from patriotic citizens all over tho country as tlie first act of America's participation in the war. Many others would go even further and pive the money outright to France, as a demonstration of gratitude for the help France gave the strujlinc colonies in the revolution. Among those favoring a big credit or gift are Myron T. Ilerrick, former ambassador to France, and John Sk"!ton Williams, controller of the United States .treasury.
