KC De rirrteni What wil the origin of tha "B!ack Watch" regiment and the name? In IToOlj; companies of hthlaridera were ralsivl for ttie protwtlon of ICdlnImrKh and the following year wore consolidated Into ii rojriilar refcluient, the highland reK'iacnt." and were ntiinh'rol th I-'orty-ffcond. On liecomlnj? nmalfia mated t!ie colors tin their tarfnns were estrnotd. leuvlner ouly tbe dark jtrwn ground its a Inrtfiu, nnd from this th-v took the nnme "niiick Watch." Who wrote the potm "Hoch Der Kaiter?" What army or navy officer was it who got into trouble by reciting it? The following information concerning the authorship of "Ilooh Der Kaiser" is from the Toronto Ftnr: The poem has been printed with the name of Robert Blake appended, but he was not the author of it. It wax written in October, 1897, by A. M. It. Gordon, then of the Montreal Herald, and was printed in that paper. We notice that the British Weekly and the Glasgow Weekly Herald of recent dates credit the poem to Alexander Macgregor Rose, ft native of Tomlntoul, Banffshire, who studied for the ministry of the Tree church at Aberdeen university and was in due time ordained to the ministry of the church nt Kvie and Kendall, in the Orkney island. Meeting with financial reverses, he emigrated to Canada and engaged la journalistic work at Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal, where ne a led in ir.es. llie poem has also been credited to the late Rear Admiral Cotrhlan of the United Stntes navy, who recited the verses at a private dinner of the Union League club in New York. It was said that the kaiser was deeply offended, hut it afterward appeared that he laughed over the incident and made no representation regarding it to Washington. Will you kindly inform a constant reader of the capacity cf a machine or Catling gun as to the number of .hots which can be fired a minute? It varies according to the type of weapon. In a general way it may be sai l that such a gun fires from 200 to S00 shots a minute. i I desire to know when the nation firat began to celebrate Washington's birthday. Washington's birthday was celebrated throughout the country la 17W and thereafter. It was in imitation of the celebration of the king's birthday and was suggested or fit least furthered by tiie Society of the Cincinnati. Adams' birthday was also celebrated, but less generally than Washington's. Jefferson rt-fused to permit his to be celebrated, and the custom ceased, but thu death of Washington in 1710 brought about a reaction from the anti-Federalist opposition tr him. and his natal v.iy his been honored ever since.
