SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS WITH A CUSS WORD. "The damned short-sightedness of the Calumet region" was a phras. which an architect of Chicago who has drawn plans -for skyscrapers, gov crnment buildings and great hotels and seen the great cities of Americ grow, used at a banquet in Indianapolis recently to express the only reap-oi he kjiew of to prevent thi.-; city from becoming a great metropolis, tip world's center of industry and the first city of Indiana. The use of a cusa word by the architect indicates he wa3 a little exonerated with tho Calumet region for some reason or other, although he i not a resident o? it. I3ut no maLter what his grievance, there, is a seriou c-hargo in the word, "chort-sightednes?." Is it true the great Calumet regio c.T Indiana does not appreciate its opportunities? Has' it neglected to pla for the growth it is constant.!;,- receiving and the preater expansion which i bound to come? The world's largest fteel mill has been builded at Gar and in Whiting are the biggest oil refineries. More steel mills are bein built and more refineries located at East Chicago. The development of th Wolf Lake harbor, utilisation of the land bordering it, the great railroa facilities and the canal and river in Hammond are bound to double, trip! and quadruple the population of that city. Cities wiil prow tight together and in the meantime will Hammond, East Chicago and Whiting be oonfen
apart? Is the little matter of politics and offices to prejudice the peop! j and bl'ind them against the need of immediate amalgamation? What e I lg it then that is handicapping these great, industrial communities hut "short j sichtedness"? S The first step, and one which should be taken at once without furthe ' delay towards preparing for the great future, is the amalgamation c.f Han ' rr.ond. Whiting and East Chicago tinder a commission form of governmen I of the city-manager plan.

HIGH PRICE OF EVERYTHING.

The high price of food is offset, by the high price of material, lab J supervision and profits. If the prices are high, there is more money to pa j for them, and so one i3 the counterpoise of the other. There is , nobod;, t Justified in kicking violently against the high prices except the salaried men j whose compensati' n .was fixed before the high cost era and yet remain.- ; without change. There seems to be- only two things for them to do: One ' ia to exercise patience, which, nreordine to the Scriptures, does her. perfect ; worlr, "wanting nothing." That is sound gospel 1o whosoever practices it. ' Another- way is to resort to a simple, wholesome diet, plenty hut not too 1 much, and leaving no fragments to throw away, llich cost is a blessing to ' fill who resort to this style of living. .They are happier, healthier and surer ! to get to heaven than if they eat too many desserts or meet the glamors ;

KNIGHTS AND MASONS FOUND NO HORNS. At Gary, a few nights ago, a public meeting was held under the ptispices of the Knights of Columbus. Non-Catholics were invited and a Protestant who also is a member of the Masonic fraternity, consented to act as chairman of the meeting. Throughout, the. evening the best of feeling prevailed between the Catholies and Pro'estants and each learned that the other did not wear horns. In this locality Cathohes and Protectants
