CONTINUATION OF VAYHLNGER ADDRESS IN HAMMOND (Continued from page five.)

We have possibly been knocked out at one session or another, but there has never been a time when we were not up and ready for the very next round. So I say we have never been defeated. But never have been so many Rood acts accomplished as in this last session of Congress. You know that bill for putting saloons out of the District of Columbia? It has been a humiliation to you and to me when we visited Washington to know that It took so many saloon to supply Uncle Sam's employes over there In that, capital city. I say south. this bill prohibiting- sale of alcoholic drinks in the District of Columbia entirely in the hands of Cong-res when It came Up for passage this time, it wasn't an easy tank, no indeed. It was not. You read the history of that movement find you will remember how the enemies stood not only for one day. but for two days and tried to defeat that bill, and you will remember how the second day was spent In filibuster, and it Just seemed that the prohibition measure was defeated. It was in the hands of an unfriendly committee and it was necessary for its friends to demand on the floor of the House that that committee be Instructed to bring that bill out at once, and they finally

Drought it out, and then amendment i started out at a lively rate. Well, the after, amendment was presented until j . ar hadn't R-ot very far when the f.:ten long tedious roll calls were ner.es-j low v rl Wf)s holding the corpse said: snry. taking- 45 minutes for each roll I "Say. say, Jim, do v.,.i 'Know- this is the II v f .. . . . . ....

'"'I- I't'UTi? I II? Wm.OS V RUhS .It'll and permitted that bill to pass with such a splendid majority. (Grout applause.) "L)on't you think for one single moment that we are lighting an enemy that is easily vanquished. Don't you think for one single moment that because we have passed the statewide prohibition , hill that th liquor trafllc is iroina- to sit back and pit down and say to us: ! 'Now we have been defeated; you have won in a fair square fight." Not a bit ! of It. Not a bit of it. We ar- going to be compelled to meet It in the Con - stltutlonal convention in not far future, when th 1 Indiana in the hey expect that we will not be ahie to wiite our prohibition measure in that Const ittjt ion. "Oh, my friends, that was not. the only victory! You remember when the question came up as to the 'bone dry" bill by which liquor should not be shipped by mail through the postofficcs Into prohibition territory and its advertising matter should not be. permitted to go into prohibition states, when that question came up it looked as though it were Koing to be defeated, but some of our friends said: 'We will taek It on as a rider to :ut appropriation bill and maybe jt will ride through to victory,' and it did. It. rode through to victory, and the president signed it. One of the greatest victories we have had in this great movement. (Applause.) "Then you remember the Porto Rican bill, arrantiriir rltijpnchin e.nrriea ivith it a prohibition measure. "Now, when the question of prohibition for Alaska came up we didn't even have to spend any time on it; it went through without even the formality of a roll call. Why they gave prohibition to Alaska without ever having a roll call on it. Now I say that is moving -that Is moving along In these days. "Why, you look over here in the state of Missouri; the legislature you will find they have submitted prohibition to the people of Missouri. Kansas passed a 'bone dry' bill that will keep all booze, everything, out of the state of Kansas. Now is it any wonder that the liquor t-afflc is feeling wonderfully sore? "That would be enough, but then here we have old Indiana! Indiana! Why they supposed they owned us. I am surprised I am surprised when I think that Indiana was one of the states that disgraced herself by standing solidly against the Hobson resolution for prohibition resolution for prohibition onlytwo years ago. Think of it! Think of It! Why, they supposed that in Indiana they were perfectly safe. Why did they do it? Well, you know, we have tried every movement under the sun in dealing with the liquor traffic except the right one. We have been a long time getting up to it, but now we are here. You remember we had free whiskey for a long time in Indiana. Why, men sold it just the same as any other commodity. They said that alcohol is the. same as any other commodity. Why. we believed it for a long time. We had free whiskey for a long time. Any man could sell it. Then we had a license policy, adopted that. Any man could ask for license- and It would lie granted. Why. we had no regulation of the number of saloons, kind of saloons, quantity to be sold or anything of the kind. Then finally we came tip to the time when we passed that Nicholson law. You remember thrt gave us the opportunity to remonstrate agB.inst the . c.tnr,n nr the sa 1 oonk ee pe r w li G appliediffor license Men could apply every month in the year, just as many as pleased could apply. They kept us busy, didn't they? They kept us busy. Why. the women walked through the mud and slush, hail and the snow and sleet, through the dust and the broking hot sun carrying these remonstrances, and the men worked shoulder to should' r with them to put out the saloons, and we prevented many a saloon from opening up in Indiana. Then finally we passed an amendment to that law that made it a little easier the Moore law. You remember it; we put a blanket remonstrance over the township against the whole number. And with that law we did splendid work. We stamped out the saloons in that way. Then there came the time when Governor Hanly oittino- in the Governor's chair at i Indianapolis. You remember that he called a special session of the legislature and gave us the county local option law. Th-rn the women said: 'Now we have something that will prevent the alcohol trade; now we will light the saloon out of a majority of our counties and then we will demand a statewide prohibition bill and they will not dnre to refuse us. Then we all got together and we worked for it and voted the saloons out of 70 of the I2 counties. A splendid majority, wasn't it? Voted them out of 70 of the 02 counties in the state. Then when we went down to the legislature, did we get state-wide prohibition? No. We got our county option law repealed and we got in its place township and city option, the one that we call the infamous Proctor bill, written on our statute books, one of the most infamous laws that ever was written on our statute books. That was supposed to regulate the liquor traffic. Now when we got that, what do you think we did? We turned around and voted the saloons back in 30 of the 70 dry counties. You know the way we have done things in Indiana reminds me of a story I heard one time on a doctor. There was a young doctor walking along the country road at midnight, and us he passed a cemetery gate there was standing in front . of the gate a largo automobile. Now lie said: mat is. very strange, an automobile in front of the cemetery gate. I know that that j can mean but just one thing that is , "body snatchers'." There' was a hedge j row on the other side of the road, so j the young doctor went over and crawled under the hedge fence. He j thought he would watch and see if he j couldn't see what happened. He hadn't ; waited very long until two great strap- ; ping men came up to the car carrying j n great corpse. As they came up to the j car one of them climbed into the auto-; mobile and grabbed the corpse and they i put him in the seat, fixed him in the corner of the seat and put at. hat over his head and puiled it down over his eyes. Then they took the lape-robe and very carefully tucked it around him. After they had h!ii fixed up, why they got out quick and went back into the cemetery to get their tools where they had taken the corpse out. The doctor

(iime from under the hedge fence an! came over tr the car and dragee.) the corpse- out of the car and took him over to where he had b.cn, tlu n t:v doctor came over and timk the seal that had been occupied by the corpse. He put the hat on his head and pulled it down close over his eyes and took the lap-robe and wrapped it very carefully around him, then ho crossed his hands and sat there and waited. After a bit the in --n came back in a very great hurry and ono of them Jumped in and

took his sent find snuggled up close! against the corpse, put bis arms around his shoulders to hold him in position while they ran. The other fellow in ! the front seat took the wheel and they j I wi.rmt.ct . i f f T ,-.. u. l.i ever got a hold of. the warmest stiff I ever felt.' Despair replaces ambition and weakness and exhaustion take the place of strength. I know that success and happiness depend upon body and brain vitalitv. The lack of force is always due to functional decline, to a diseased condition of one or more of the organs of the body, or to a devitalized nervous system. The man who is not right physically and mentally and neglects himself not only limits his future prospects, "n,t is using un the physical capital he already possesses. I have, made the scientific treatment of a few diseases a. lifelong study. I deal in scientific knowledge and give my patients more for their money than they ran get elsewhere. M y methods of treatment are up to date in every respect. Every case is given a thorough atid searching examination, tho cause of the disease is discovered, and the. proper treatment administered. No two cas.--are exactly alike, consequently each patient is given persona attention and treatment prescribed accordingly. Why ITot Get the Bet. Tirst? It Will Cost Less Than the Worst. The diseases of my specialty are diseasos of which the general practitioner is rankHignorant, he knowing but little more about them than you. He is wholly unprepared in experience, k n o w 1 e d g e and equipment and totally unable to successfully treat them and when he undertakes their care he will more than lik.-ly catise or allow serious complications to aris'-. which sooner or lat' r necessitates ihe s. rvices of a skilled specialist. fel I Guarantee Hours 9 to 8, Sundays 9 to 1. t 'JJ i ?
