BANQUET FOR FRIDAY IS PUHNED

The Hammond Plan campaign having demonstrated that It is a movement deservir.gr unstinted support, and organizations for continued work having been perfected, the next step now is to finance the movement. Ways and means for this are to be discussed at a. 7 o'clock banquet at the Country club on Friday night of this we,k. The executive committee is extending- invitations for this to the twenty-eight men who gathered at the Country club last December and there pledged their support to the movement, and to the advisory council for the Hammond Plan which was later selected. Getting down to some real work the working- committees are planning a home gardening campaign and also a city wide ciean-up of streets and alleys. The first will be, under the direction of V. C. Belman who in the past inspired some work along this line, while the clean-up campaign is to be worked out by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Two other things to whlf-h the executive committee ami the advisory council are committed are fostering of community clubs, and the aid to help the children in all the schools "realize their life work." A start toward the inifstlon blank to be filled out by "all children up to a certain age in and out. of school.

HIGH MARK FOR CALUMET AVENUE FRONTAGE Calumet avenue inside frcntage south of Carroll street reached u new high mark this week when Jacob Diamond paid t7C a front foot for the Otto Hetkner lot of seventy-five feet frontage and 160 feet depth. The frontage is Just south of the seventy-five f?et at the southeast corner of Calumet avenue and Carroll street which William H'-rkner several years aero sold to Knglehardt Ullrich for $SmO. ft is understood that Mr. Diamond bought the lot with its unusual depth for speculation. It has a small residence improvement on it.

board was short on preparedness as well as ballots as far as the G. O. I', was concerned. It was explained that a great many

Republicans, who voted for Wilson, i must have come back to the folds and that hundreds of Democrats must have! gotten into the Republican primaries, for last fall 3. .17.6 Democrats voted for secretary of state and 3.608 Republican did likewise. In some precincts voting had to quit at two o'clock. Dr. Smith's : workers in some precincts had as many ! as 30 men who were deprived of the j right to vote. The rumors that deputy United States' marshals and department of justice op-j eratives would watch the Gary pri- j mari-:-s from the standpoint possibly of! getting evidence to be supplemental in 1 the Lake county election fraud cases or ' else the government intended, to take j a hand in affiirs on constitutional, but j

riot statutory grounds. In any event the reports of presence of federal men had a good effect. There was order, no saloons opened their side doors, and in the negro precincts the story that "three colored secret service nn-n" were on duty caused all strange darkies to be regarded with suspicion. Incidentally it is said that a number of colored gentlemen with guilty consciences kept away from the polls.
