THE VALUE OF VACCINATION. Jn (5ai-y .-e era! cases of smallpox broke out. The disease was first apparent at the V. M. C. A., where three of the .voting; men's dormitory resilient? were stricken. These men ha.i never been vaccinated of nearly a hundred o-her no one who had beep, vaccina ed even oaoe wa; subject to rh .disease. This tes'.ifles 'o the value of vaccination. In (term any 'he law requires ha: ail children be vaccinated before attaining the ago of one year and a econd time hefot e they are twelve years old. There seems to be an impression there that two successful vaccinations count as a great deal. In our army, navy and national p'l.trd. where vaccination is enforced. smaliiox is never heard of. We hear of a great deal of smallpox among negroes. That is because they have no;, been vaccinated, and the vims has not been instilled in the race as the case among most whites. In Gary all of the cases are miid ones, find while the patients were never vaccinated, the chances are thai their parents and grandparents were, so they have to thank the partial immunity of their forebears for not being subjected to a greater degree of affliction.

Editor Time: Kindly a-inounce tht t wl'I be a candidate at the Starch primaries for the republican nomination for mayor of the city of Gary, the office to which I was elected three yearn ago. and that I trust that my administration of the office again deserves the support of the voters. 1-J4-R. O. JOHNSON.

I Editor Tins?: ! Please announce to the peop'e. of; i Gary that I am a candidate for the j j nomination of eoun.-i!n;an-at-large, sub- ! jeot to thu ileci.f'on of the tepublicanj I primaries. I PETER PISARSKI. J Editor Gary Exiling Times: j Kindly aiinounr(! .),at I will be aj I candidate for the nomination on the

republican ticket for councilman nt large at the prima !?s 0n March 6. 1517. , Yours very truly, j 2-3 - II M. DAVIS.

THE BURGEONING OF THE BULL. P- rea.-on of an unusual murder tragedy just outside the city : tniis. Hammond has swarmed lately with Chicago newspaper reporters. Technically speaking they are "leR' men, not reporters. There doesn't seem io be a good reporter In the whole outfit. They keep the pavement warm between the police station and the mo r. true a part of the time and the other tart of the time they keep chairs around a poker table warm. As usual he stories of the sensational affair printed in the Chicago l-apers are wide of the m;h. Of course the boys care nothing about the truth. V.'e will fake the v.-. g. -.. self-styled world's greatest newspaper as an example. We would suggest to the city editor that when he sends a reporter to Hammond, he would send one who knows where he is gmrig. Peril aps the c. e. himself needs to strdy ?ocal geography, we don't know. The w. g. n. sory yesterday was full of P.umham, the Rurnham morgue, the

Rurnhani police station, etc. Now a five-year-old child ought to know that

the morgue is in Hammond miles away not Hurnham. The yarn is full of other discrepancies. Today's is just as bad. The reporter describes a woman's handkerchief and the w. g. n. associates that with the murder. Why doesn't it bring in all the old junk alcng the auto highway? What of t'- - flotsam and jetsam thrown mi by passing tourists? If the Trib's "leg" n - i were reaily indusnious they would brini? into the story a few more beer 1 - 'tie?, crackerjack boxe?, discarded articles of clothing, old shoes, hats, hot wa'er bo'tles. corsr, baked bean carts and the good Lord know what else that may be found along country roadsides. The w. g. n. 'story today describes th visit of its reporters to the blood pool site yesterday. They were never anywhere near the place, but with a copy of The. Times in front of them at night phoned in to the city desk the story verbatim and passed it off as their own. Some of the Chicago newspaper stories of the "willow copse" tragedy have been so far from the truth, so full of speculations and distortion?, so full of things that never happened, so full of theories that never pan out, that they are laughable in the extreme. And the self-sty'.ed world's greatest newspaper is the bel!-wehr offender.

LAFOLLETTE? OH, WELL! Senator i.;s Fo!;e:-e, one of the earlier Progressive secessionist from th Republican party, seems to be well satisfied wih the result of the presidential election. He says he sees "fine encouragement" for popular government in t'r.o "wrecking of machines n bo'h piries,'' which he thus sums up: "Wall stree came in behind IIus;he.s and tried to pirt him over with iiiosoy and lost. Boss Murphy 'knifed' Wilson --and lost. The Rooseveltian j'ngoes shouted for !!uEhe-and lost. Iloss Sullivan laid down on Wilson and lost. Boss Tngzart 'failed' as his party's nominee in Indiana and lost. The oil guard' po?ir l:;ans stuck their thumb? into Hushes' campaign and !s" Having himself received an enormous majority in his own sta'e. "Fight;ug '.Hi' ran well afford to ake a cheerful view of the results in general.
