Sectional Basketball Tournament to Be Played in a Storeroom? Valparaiso is a Most Inconvenient Place. Substitution of Rensselaer, Kentland and Morocco for South Bend. l.aPorte and Michigan City and the selection of A'alparaiso as the city in which the annual sectional basketball tournament is to be held, ..larch 9 and lo. are pills that the Lake county basketball fan is having a hard time to swallow. When it was announced sometime ago that Principal Frank D. McElroy of Hammond had been honored with a membership on the state board of athletic control it was hoped his influence would put a stop lo the practice at Indianapolis of dealing to Lake county from the bottom of the deck. But this latest poke in the nose irikdicates the same old policy is being fol lowed out. The sectional tournament of which Lake county is a part will this year be the most uninteresting in the state of Indiana, beyond a doubt. Three of the best teams have been withdrawn or allowed to withdraw. Instead' of cutting down and redistricting the tournament it should have, been enlarged. Kentland, Rensselaer, Morocco. Chesterton and Wheeler mean nothing in our young lives, say Lake countyfans, and tho tournament will amount to nothing more than a contest between the leading teams of t!4. county. It doesn't take a seer to predict that one of the three leading Lake county teams will win. No one would bet otherwise. Flay In Storeroom f A'alparaiso hasn't much of a basketball team this year. For that matter it didn't have a basketball team last year just a gang of rangy lads who outbeefed their opponents. And Valparaiso's playing lloor is said to be a storeroom. Of all things. A SECTIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN A storeroom: Either Hammond. East Chicago or Gary should have had the tournament because of the central location and transportation. A'alparaiso is off in a corner and the teams will have to go there and board during the tournament. Imagine Lowell or Crown Point going back and forth to Valpo every day. Of course, in all probability Lowell and Crown Point will be through with their rrogram the first day but the players and fans would like to see the balance of the tournament. East Chicago Stung-. It is enough to make the blood boii. At the tournament last year the hardest and most interesting games were those in which LaPorte and South Bend participated. If the tourney had been held this year in East Chicago where there are new gymnasiums. South Bend. LaPorte, Michigan City. Goshen. Elkhart and Gary would have had only a brief journey on the South Shore while the Other teams could hae gone by way of Hammond in short time at minimum farts. If the tourney had been held in Hammond more than likely one would see a nice fight or two for his money. As Hammond and Gary have each had the tourney East Chicago should have had it this year. Is the state board of control made up of men so unreasonable that they couldn't have understood these things if the facts were laid before them? After the splendid accommodations at the Froebe! school in Gary last spring when everything was conducted as good as a Central States Tournament think of spending good money and time to go to A'alpo and natch 'em play in a STOREROOM? And with South Bend and LaPorte out of it to boot. BASKETBALL GAMES Hammond at AVhiting. Emerson at Froebel. and East Chicago at Lowell, are on the Lake County Basketball Association schedule for Friday evening of this week. NORTHWESTERN FIVE BESTS IDWJL 24-15 CHICAGO. Jan. 25. CUBS TO FIGURE II BIG DEAL Trade winds are again blowing around the Cub headquarters. President Charles Weeghman has been running up a long-distance phone bill wilh amazing recklessness for the last fewdays and he finally admitted last night that all the expendiutre of time and money was due to a chance to get a needed athlete from another club. AVho the athlete may be. what club he will come from and who will go in exchange are things that AVeeghman will not speak about. It is only known that at the present rate of progress the deal will be consummated tomorrow. This is on the authority of th.i Cub boss. It is reasonable to suppose that the man sought is a catcher. Managcr Mitehel when at Chicago recently expressed a desire for a good backstop, and since then AVeeghman has had a line oft for such a gent. It wouldn't occasion ajiy surprise if Ivy AVingo should turn out to be the one involved. He is at present doing business as a member oi" the Reds. An effort was made some time ago to land Frank Snyder, but the idea was abandoned. The Cardinals placed too big a fi: jre on that particular athlete. DARGEY T PITTSBURGH. FA.. The Elgin boys are all ex-college stars and have held the championship of Illinois outside of Chicago for several years. Their team is captained by North, who plays right guard, and who is considered one of the best men in the region. Addicka, who was captain of the team last year, is playing the fordward position better tha ever. Lingren. their star utility man. is still with them. Ryan and Ansel are this year's additions. The Owls were out again last evening for a stiff workout. The boys are working hard for this game and for the IaPorte game to be played Saturday at LaPorte.
