As you have noted there has heen a great influx of negroes into local industrial communities. They come from the south. Mills, burdened with

1 orders and deprived of the immigrant stream of help, have had to import

the K;u'fe.-.

Hut their exodus northward is worrying Dixie. In a way they have'

itteared the negroes none too well in the south. Either it is the liifth wages

the nesro north. The very' i,,.t ,,-h-jt hi jtatus will bo hnro psneciallv in flarv TInmmond and

benefit that

the

lo ii" wants a bicycle must do without, candy and soda and the like, hut he knows his wheel will give him lasting pleasures that over-balance the little sacrifices. Saving for a purpose is not difficult, and self-denial for larger pleasures becomes' a joy. It is easy to follow the line of least resistance to do the easy thing; to follow the crowd. But following .crowds brings you to do Desirable goal. t is a splendid achievement this doing without and few learn it. But rh,e strtieture it builds is a lasting one and beautiful. And the pitiful fact ig thai, il you do not learn to do without now, there may come a time when you have to do without, and then it will be too late. That is the lesson of the poorhouse and the bread line. And as sure as you practice the sin of self-gratification and ignore the virtue of self-control, listen to the lure of the shop window, the amusement column, the appeal that is on every hand to spend, and let yourself go, you, too, will join a crowd that is sliding down hill to nowhere, only to get a hard bump at the bottom, when it is too late to mend and wake up to vain regrets. Get the thrift habit now and thrift is just, doing without, until doing without becomes a habit that has untold blessings in store for those who practice it.

HOW TO STARVE BELGIUM. The quickest way to starve the Belgians to death would be for President Wilson to take the advice of those hysterical and foolish Americans who demand that diplomatic relations with Germany be severed as a protest against the deportations. If the United States were to sever diplomatic relations with Germany for that reason, not only would Mr. Gerard come home but Mr. Whitlock would come home too and the American commission would have to leave Belgium. In consequence the distribution of food which is carried on by this commission would cease and Belgium would starve. So far as Belgium is concerned, the only opportunity that the United Slates has to render service to that unfortunate country lies in maintaining diplomatic relation? with Germany so long as such relations are possible.
