It was declared m adjourned session that there was no foundation at this time for the grave charges ordered made against Johnson and less grievious ones against the safety commissioners. Alfred Carlson and M. Burr. "1 wish to say that we investigated along the lines which we proposed and we found that the safety board concluded to give George Xestorovitch a trial, to prefer charges and to give him a hearing according to law. That being the primary object of the proceedings taken by the council this committee has come to the conclusion that there is no foundation for the charges at this time." announced Chairman Houren of the police investigation committee. Thereupon the council withdrew and 300 persons gathered in the room filed out of the place, some of them cheering. When Mayor Johnson got the news he held a reception in his private office. Kesu.lt of War. The fight between the council and the mayor began after the steel trust's political department, which helped to elect Johnson, fell out with him. The council "also quarreled with the mayor over vice questions and when Capt. George Xestorovitch was dismissed from the police force the Serbian aldermen got into the tight. They were determined to impeach Johnson and the safety commissioners. V. S. Watching Things. Now that the impeachment proceedings are out of the way the h..ing of the Gary and Interurban franchise and the awarding of a $300,000 sewer contract, which big interests are said to be seeking, will be the next matter of concern.
