ELKS OUT s The preliminary rehearsal for the bi Elgs minstrel show that will be pulled oft in East Chicago on the Uth and 19th of this month was held yesterday afternoon at the Elks rooms. East Chicago bank building. Clint Draper, of the Miller and Draper, New York city, the men who are staging and handling the affair, was present and took charge of the proceedings. There were sixty singers and black face artists that responded to the call. The management considered that this was a splendid showing and that it range one of the Dest rninstrei snows ever held in this section of the f-tatei All but two of the cast of sixteen were tentatively selected and will be given a try-out within the next few days. A select list of thirty-five ballad singers was also agreed upon. There will not be a stale thing in the whole performance. The songs are just off the press in Chicago and many of them are expected to be the great hits of the month. The costumes are brand new and there will be special scenery prepared exclusively for this event. In fact, a good deal of money will be spent to make this show uptodate nnd classy in every way. Mr. Clark as representative of Miller and Draper said this morning that the chorus that was tried out yesterday was one of the best choruses that the company had ever heard in the preliminary"try out; and that the whole bunch took to the songs as naturally as a duck to water. "With the support that East Chicago is able to give us, it is no gamble at all that we will be able to put on one of the best shows we ever handled." VOICE OF P E O F lTe SAYS THEY CAN'T WAIT Editor Times: Pear Sir: In your issue of Jan. 4 under the above caption your write. "The ministers of Lake county's big municipalities who are agitating the question of saloon closing on Sunday should either do a good job of it or let it alone." Permit me on behalf of the ministers and churches to say we are acting from the standpoint of our faith and of the new thought that the whole world is getting, that the saloon is bad any day and especially so on rest days when we are not employed: the temptation is stronger to lounge and drink. We can't wait until other cities in Illinois enforce their laws before enforcing ours. There V 4

is no local advantage to be gained by a wet section of this territory over a dry section. The dry section will be more orderly, consume less rum and its citizens have more money on Monday than in the wet portions. It is now proven that the presence of the saloon is a continued suggestion to the drinker and Increases the business 85 per cent above normal. In other words when a town or state Is dry and remains dry for a period of years drinking fftlls off from 22J gallons per capita to 2i gallons. We think if the people drank less It would be better for them and all legitimate business. Yours truly, REV. F. P. BLAKEMORE, DYER Dance at Spring Hill Grove, Wednesday, Jan. 10th. Very friendly relations exist between the above two grottoes as was evidenced when Chicago sent about 150 of their picked men to assist in the last ceremonial of Al-Hassan held at the Hartley theatre a couple of months ago. It is expected, therefore, that a large delegation of East Chicago boys will go to Chicago on the 10th. TIMES ada are personal messages to tbe people of this community from the merchants.
