Eugene Putnam of Valparaiso university, is visiting his parents here. The quilt raffled by the Ladies' Aid society of th,e Sacred Heart church for the benefit of the orphan asylum at Baat Chicago, was -won by No. 262 which was held by J. H. Kelly of Ohio avenue. The sum of $80.05 was realized. Services at the M. E. church, S. C. Borers. Pastor. Sunday school at 8:45: preaching- at Theme: "A New Tear's Message." Epworth league at 6:30; preaching- at 7:30. Theme: "A Lesson from the Fig Tree.' A cordial invitation is extended to the public to attend , these services. Mrs. John Schaub and son Carl left today for Laporte, where they will spend a few days visiting her sister, Mrs. Zimmerman. Ray Ault of Momence, 111., is the guest of Whiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. John C Hall of Oliver street, have returned from Bloomington. 111., where they spent a week and attended a reunion of Mr. Hall's family. Mips Elizabeth Putnam of Decatur, 111., who is spending the holidays with her parents. Dr. and Mss. W. E. Putnam, will return to Decatur next Tuesday Floyd Belscamper of Davenport, la., is a guest at the Cameron home. The Jewish people gave an entertainment at which a program was given, the purpose of the gathering being for the purpose of a get-together for the young people. The program consisted of ah oration, "The Wandering Jew." by Jasper Oevirts reading. Miriam Gor don: story, Dora Gordon; piano duet, Martha and Eva Migats. It Is planned to have these meetings quite frequently. Mr. Norris, brother-in-law of Mrs. Rittman and Mrs. Bartels, passed away at his home In the East Side on Thursday. Mr. Norris has been employed at the Standard Oil Company in Willing for over twenty years. Miss Elisabeth Erdlits who has been here visiting her aunt and uncle. Dr. and Mrs. W. E. Putnam, has returned to Normal- school at Marquette, Mich. Miss Jessie M. Curtis will entertain the members of the Trt Kappa sorority at a New Tear's party at her home In Oliver street Monday afternoon. Andy Pavochak, who was adjudged insane and who escaped from the poor farm at Crown Point, was returned again to be held there until his removal to the . state Institution at Logansport. The south branch of the Whiting public library, located at 406 Steiber street, was opened to the public Wednesday. Miss Hazel F. Long and Miss Charlotte Wilk will be stationed at the
ew branch, being- relieved by members
of the main library staff. The new library was opened for the purpose of giving the residents In the south part of the city a better access to literature. There are books for the children and for sdults, together with a collection of foreign books In Slovak Crotian, Hungarian and Polish. There will also be a number of foreign newspapers on file. The hours for the
branch are the same aa those at the main library, from 3 to p. m., with only the reading room open on Sundays and from present Indications will be quite popular. The Conroy hotel on 119th 6treet, will be opened by Bereolos Bros., owners of the Maine and Majestic restaurants at Hammond, on Jan. 1. Miss Myrtle Pedersen who has been
spending the holidays at her home here will return to Farmington, 111., on Sunday. Undertaker A. D. Heyden has engaged the services of William Flagler, an expert embalmer, who will assist him in his work. Mr, Flagler with his wife moved here from Minneapolis. Minn., yesterday and are living at Mi!s Swan's on Sheridan avenue.
