Jerry McColley. one of tha city's oldest roi-.dents. died at his homo on Harrington avenue on Thursday afternoon following an illness lasting for some time. He was a widower, his wife passing away several years' ago. The funeral will be held today. Owing to the fact that New Years comes on the first Monday in the month the city council meeting will be postponed until Tuesday evening, January ind. Besides accepting the proposals of the various banks for the use of city funds th council members expect a busy session, cleaning up the tag ends of the 1916 business and starting with a clean blotter for 1917. Representative Ed C. Davis, accompanied by his wife and tson. will leave for the south, just before tha opening of the state legislature. Mrs. Davis and son to spend the winter In the south for the benefit of th son's health, he having been ill for several months, and the doctors advising a rest and the southern climate to effect a cure. City workmen were busy yesterday flooding the skating pond on the Bowman trart of land, north west of this city, and when the work is finished the youngsters of the city will have a splendid place to enjoy the winter's sport in safety. Fancher Lake Is considered a dangerous risk at all times of tfie year and many children were deprived of a place to skate, until the rity come to their relief and secured tha Bowman water for the purpose. The ice will be kept in gool stage as long as the weather permits. A pool and billiard tournament has been started at the Comercial club rooms, about fifteen contestants being entered in the race for the medal. The handicap list has been arranged and much interest is being manifested in the outcome of the match. The first games of the tournament will be played next week. George V. Sherman and a gang of workmen will commence the harvesting of the sumex'8 supply of Ice for Crown Poi'nt this iriorning. The lee is reported to be nine or ten inches thick and of an excelent quality p.nd all indications are that the best Ice crop in j'ears will be harvested, with no danger of a famine for the vicinity next summer. About thirty men ariU teams will be engaged in the work. CVfrs. Herman 'Iegtmeier is visiting with friends at Benaonville, 111., for a few days. Deputy Sheriff Fred Friedley transacted business in Gary and Hammond yesterday. The cars on the Gary and Southern line are being treated to a new coat of raint. which greatly improves their appearances.
