Let's learn to say, "I can't afford it." Let's be honest and fearless in stating our position and In asserting our real standing. Let's not only be fearless in acknowledging frankly our Inability to buy luxuries and indulgences, but let us also consistently refrain from attempting things that lie beyond our means. Indianapolis Times. That is multum in parvo with a vengeance. People talk about the high cost of living until it becomes, a bore. Editors write long screeds about it until It wearies their readers, but in the above editorialette so much i;said in so small a space, so few words that it is almost classic. It is the essence, too, of thrift to say, 'J can't afford It." Why not make it your household slogan? 3 agqgJjgawvBwaT r?yr,"" Santa Decides Upon McGarry Quality Jewelry irw- .iff ll 1 , tt mi 4

HE TAKES EXCEPTION. A reader takes exception to our editorial of yesterday regarding the Inability of Uncle Sam to protect his people. To say nothing of the Americans who have been slaughtered by the hundreds in Mexico and drowned by German submarine activities, let us insider the United States proper. Last year nearly ten thousand people were murdered in the United States, and for murdering that awful number only 119 were executed. In the past few years nearly 4,000 people have been lynched. Our murder rate is exactly 20 times larger than any European country. We free more murderers and felons in this country than in any other country under the sun. Murderers are safer in this county than in any other land on the globe.
FORCING UP FOOD PRICES. Writes Martin Littleton in the New York World: I firmly believe that the government should refrain from entering any field of industry which tbe individual can better develop, but the band of exploiters who constrict the arteries of trade and withhold the free and just circulation of life necessaries are calling down npon themselves the blind wrath of men and women who may not stop in time to preserve a free government and a free people. A continuance of conditions may yet bring parts of America to the 'haos that characterized certain phases of the French, revolution. There will be no socialism, but there will be worse; sporadic nihilism unless a remedy soon ensues. And God help the speculators in foodstuffs, the cold storage thieves, the butter and egg pirates: The spirit of unrest is greater Mian the surface shows, more than the symptoms of a Capital-Labor conlict indicates. Unless labor, capital and government co-operate to repress the agencies contributing to forcing up the cost of living, the crust may fly off a seething volcano of wrath.
I CAN'T AFFORD IT.
One little phrase, a saying few have the nerve to repeat, would wort mightily to cut down the higher cost of living. If everybody would simply say: "I can't afford it at theViriee," and decline to
WORK FOR THE CIVIC SERVICE COMMISSION. Wnen the Civic Service commission of the Gary Commercial club was organized to co-oerate with Mayor Johnson in remedying conditions in Gary, it was announced that the body, made up of estimable gentlemen of high character, was a permanent one with authority to cope with emergencies aa they arise. Happily the undesirable conditions that helped to place Gary in the limelight in no pleasant way have gradually dissolved from view and the commission, which faced a big task, finds itself not called upon to expend its energies on efforts, thankless to say the least. But the commission need not remain idle. To the county, the people of Gary, to the big Industries that pay the bulk of the taxes as well as to the little tax-payer the commission has a splendid opportunity to render a great service. It is just the body to robe into slag, affairs in Lake county. An interested public has long desired to know why slag is purchased supposedly at such a low price and sold for public purposes at such a high one. Slag and its price has considerable to do with road costs in this county, and if a lower level and a better product can be obtained, let it be done. Further, the Civic Service commission could ascertain if there is any connecting link between slag and' politics, either municipal or of higher degree; whether contributions are ever made to campaign funds; how contracts are carried out. If it proceeds in the task, the commission, while it has not tbe power to enforce obedience, should request that the officials of corporations who produce slag to truthfully tell what It costs and then as public records are available, ascertain for what it is sold. There is nothing like the limelight and taxpayers have the right to know.

ELDERLY MEN AS OFFICE "BOYS." In New York, where properity has brought a scarcity in the office-boy market, somebody found that elderly men are finely adapted for the work. Of course, they have to be paid more, but they ate worth more. The idea has spread fast and many firms say they willnever revert to any other system but the new one. There is no reason why men up in years can't be usefully employed In business institutions. They are far more reliable, more tactful, a.nd more steady than youngsters.
