AXPAYEHS T HURT Tn the reran t d:scusions that have taken place in East Chica-g-o on the inpqualltlss and discepancles in the taxnM valuations of property Jn that tty, there seems to be quite a number that anticipate as a resuit of this discussion a rise in their personal anri real estate property valuations and a consequent increase in their taxes, j This is an entirely wrong conclusion. j A coupie of years a?ro. an architect ivas secured In each end pf the city, t-j assist the assessor in determining- individual propert value and as a-result of the work that was done at that time, the small property holder sustained an increase In the aggregate r-t over a million and a half dollars. The present agitation will have no tendency to increase the valuations on this class of property. The readjustment that Is demanded at this time is a readjustment of plant valuations and' if such is secured !t will very ma-j trially lower the individual propertv tax. "j Tt will be seen that should the vain-! n.tions rwach the sum of j;;, 000. 000, and j the individual's valuation remain the! fame, the total tax would be only-fil' rr cent of the present tax: should the! valuation' reach $I.0(k66o. it would! cnly be 53 per cent of the present tax, almost cut in two. j A valuation of $22. 000. 00 would double the present bonding power of the city and would permit improvements and developments that are utterly -Impossible at the present. The school city would be no longer so handicapped that it could not properly hmise the school children and furnish Ihem with needed facilities for en1rser opportunities along- academic, and vocational lines. The bonding j power, at two per cent, would amount to $140,000. Should the valuations rach $26,000,000. the bonding power would reach $520,900. The publicity given to this movement by the press has induced other bodies outside of the chamber of commerce to become interested and it . understood that Mr. Harmon has al ready been approached about Riving n.s lain before certain classes of pec pie in various sections of the city. 3K35E5

Saric of Indiana Harbor who were in Indianapolis yesterday on business called on the governor and being very graciously received entered into a conversation that lasted nearly an hour. Mr. ar was able to throw considerable lislit on activities in this dis trict and his exposition of our improvements and present day prosperity we-e listened to with much interest on the part of his excellency. Governor Halston said that he realized that Lake county was one of the most progressive and prosperous counties of the state and one that constituted a real force in all. of the affairs of Indiana. He spoke highly of our representative men and sid that some of them we-e among his most valued personal friends. The governor stated, however, that not-w ith-standing all of our good points, some complaints had been coming to him recently from the clergy of this district, who apparently believed that there were conditions here affecting the Lquor traffic that might be materially improved. Mr. and Mrs. Saric were very much p!eaed witti their reception and thrir visit and as a result of the call they brought away with them a very favorable opinion of Governor Ralston. But the next morning, still full of uncertainty as to whom she loved the more, she left Stevens and still refuses to live with hi-
"The White Flour Pinch" have you felt it? With the advancing price of wheat "the five-cent loaf is doomed say the bakers. In its place we have the six-cent loaf in many cities only the tencent loaf. A loaf of white flour bread is not a complete ration. However wholesome and pure, it does not supply" all the proteids the human body needs. In Shredded Wheat Biscuit you have all the body-building nutriment in the whole wheat grain , prepared in a digestible form. It is always the same price, always the same high quality. Eat it for breakfast with milk or cream or with fruits. Made at Niagara Falls, N. Y.

IMPROVEMENT IN SERVICE Through , the assistance of Pastmasters C. ES. Donovan. Jr., of the west end. and H. C. Rutledge of the east end. East Chicago, the Chamber of Commerce has scored another victory in that these officials have received the sanction of the government postoffice to employ a messenger to carry mail sacks between the postoffices in the two ends of the city. This is another ' step in the perfection of inter-city mall service, on which the Chamber of Commerce has been working for the rfaet year. The notice inviting proposals for this messenger service Involves two round trips per day. Postmaster Donovan is in Chicago today perfecting the matter of routes and service Jn accordance with this plan. While In Chicago he will also take up the matter of better mail service out of this city to Chicago. At the present time ther is no out-going mail to Chicago between 7:30 a. m. and 12, noon. His plan is to secure arrangements for another pouch on this line between the aforesaid hours. This will materially assist in securing afternoon delivery of local mail in Chicago. IT'S GOING TO BE BIG NIGHT
With blare of trumpet and roll of drum the first annual high school fair will open thla evening at the high school bulidlnir. All day long the student of the high school have been accomplishing a real feat; reciting reasonably well and, at off periods, preparing for the entertainment of the crowd that Is expected tonight. And now that the sound of hammer Montlcello (Ind.) Herald wagered $500 have .put on the finishing touches, the high school building looks like a different place. Sedate class rooms have been transformed Into dens of horror, three ring circuses, Christmas baraars. The library Is readv for the persuasive auctioneer; the halls are lurid with j painted canvases which bear pressing j invitations to the fish pond, to the for-! tune tellers' booth and to the native j hunt of the humanophone. There isn't any question that the first annual high school fair will He the biggest high school event of the year. ELKS NOTICE B. P. O.
