VALUATIONS STAR FOLK

The discussion taken up in the chamber of c6mmeree of East Chica

go, at th Indiana Hsrbor monthly

meeting-, continues to be the major

subject of favorable comment where ver men father in public pieces.

Th fact ai presented by W. O. Harmon were so clear and the figures so

clearly Incontrovertible thst the state

merits have been taken as the basis for many street corner conclusions that

ars decidedly apropos.

Inasmuch as the whole question of

more equitable valuations centers

largely around the industrial plant

valuations, The Times lias been reQuested to give the tahle of figure submitted by Mr. Harmon as the valuations assessed against these manufacturing enterprises. 191. Republic Iron & Steel Co.-$ 131.395.00

After consulting with the board of

directors President H. S. Norton of the

Gary Commercial club today was to ap

point a committee of five members, who

will represent the organization in the

civic cleanup campaign. .

It will be the policy of the club and

Its committee to co-operate with n

mayor and police authorities rather than bo antagonistic to them. If any as-

sistsnce can be given it will be done.

Hodges marts Tight. Ex -City Attorney w. F. Hodges, candidate for the republican nomination for mayor, who used to lay the lash on Mayor Knotts' back., last night fathered the cleanup resolution. Mr. Hodges had been accused by Mayor Johnson of wri.tmg the anti-vice editorials in the Gary Post. v t . ' Alderman TV. S. Feuer, heading the reform forces in the city council, denounced by Johnson as "insincere" and other members .of the club criticized conditions. Oreouwnld Lambaste rtpsrs. Judge C. E. Greenwald, who was shot by a maniac a few days ago, was able to attend the meeting. The judge thought that the Gary newspapers were giving Gary too much notoriety. Messrs. Hodges, Feuer and Greenwald were censured by President Norton, who asked the members for a cooperative rather than an antagonists policy. Norton said that if the newspapers were unnecessarily stirring up things they deserved censure, but - If was quite within their province 15 print the news.

Total . J2.717.130.00 Those who are familiar with the approximate true valuations of the

plants have found many discrepancies

in the above list. In fact, ss W. B.

Van Home said at the meeting. it

would seem that the plants themselves. Especially those that are paying on th! higher valuations in proportion to

true values, would themselves wel

come an equalisation that would put

the big plants on a more equal basis with their own. Some industries have doubled their true valuations with only a fifty per cent increase In tax

able valuations. '

Attention was called to the plants of the Interstate Iron ajid Steel Co. and the Inland Steel Co. as offering the

most striking examples of low taxable

valuations. The following table shows the tatal

valuations in the city during the past five years:

During the last three years the corporations were' assessed as: 1914 . r. .81,875,710 1915 2.299,370 191 2.717,130 It will be noticed that there waa m material increase in taxable valuations in 1915, an increase of 11.951.286. Of this total Increase of nearly two millions of dollars, the corporations' increase amounted to only 8323,660. In other words, the small property holder found his property increased by $1,627.625, while the increase on the plants waa almost negligible. iThe Times story tomorrow will take up conditions that would result If the taxable valuations were raised to what would seem to be a fair figure. Mr. Harmon said that he wished it understood that he had no quarrel with the manufacturing industries of East Chicago; that he realized that they constituted the prosperity of this community; and that he was in favor of making reasonable concessions such other cities were making; but that the present taxable valuations tvere not fair to the plants themselves as a whole and were certainly unfair to the small property holder who was pay"ng from ten to twenty times as much tax in proportion to their h,o!ding8 as th. lndustrial enterprises.
