"VELVET" FOR STEEL WORKERS. With its customary line of reasoning the Gary Tribune announces the litest JO per cent increase in wages by the steel corporation Will be "velvet" lor the employes and "a large part of it no doubt will go into savings bank,-; where no homes Is (the grammar is the Tribune's) being paid for." The reason why the steel corporation and other concerns raised wages is the high cost of Irving. In other words, the steel company is sincerely tryin.? to help its employes have a a;e that keeps up with soaring living costs. To qnote an Associated Press dispatch: "OrdinSrily the question of wages would not come up for consideration or decision at this time of the year," said Chairman" KIbert H. Gary, in making the announcement in Xew York, "but in ccmseienc of the abnormal conditions now existing it has been decided to increase the wajs rates of our iron and steel companies about iO per cent, to take effect Dec. 13. In other departments increases will be equitably proportioned." Chairman Gary declined to make further comment, but another official of the corporation said the action of the directors was taken "with due regard for the higher prices prevailing for necessaries in all parts of the country." Like in the othr communities of the steel corporation there have been three increases tn wages this year. The first one was for five per cent, but it was mad; nugatory by the greed of Gary landlords, who promptly raised rental?!. Even the steel corporation in many instances advanced rentals to sum equal to fhe wage increase. Later there was a second wage increase of ten per cnt, now comes the third advance. It is a hopeful sign that corporations consider the welfare of their employes (and avoid possibilities of unrest), but with the constant cheapening of the dollar it appears that a raise is no longer a raise but an effort to keep incomes from being too badly depleted.

The traction company and its union employes are in a ruir .-overly at Indianapolis. Both sides are generously using newspaper space to get their case to the public. In the old days the employers were the only ones to recognize the value of appealing to the public via the newspaper. Whn the railway brotherhood?

strike was imminent the employes learned that the newspaper wa. a srood '

medium to present their side to the people an'd they did. In the end it is the public that decides, so it is be?t for all concerned to see to it that the judge and Jury get the facts.

MEDIAVEL LEGAL LANGUAGE. In order to prevent guilty persons escaping: on a technicality !frause- of faultily drawn indictments, the parliament of England has taken steps to simplify tbe perspiring verbosity that marks present lgal uphsp. A section of the ac, now in force reads: "Th statement of offence shall describe offeuce shortly, in ordinary language, avoiding as far as possible the u? of technical terms, and without necessarily stating all the essential details of the offence." A model example of. the new form of indictment i. ;t? follows: Statement of Offence: Murder. Partlcnlars of Offence: A. B.. on the day of , in the .-ouniy f , umrdered T. S. In speaking of the ctiacge, the Mew York Sun compares it with the fol

We Iot tbe custom about as much as the employment of such phrases as "Your petition humbly begs." etc., scrapings in words which some lawyers revel. I.awyr and litigant should show the utmost respect for the court, but why mark the pleas to tbe bench in fawning, groveling words that debase the majeaty of the law and Its administrator? Less debasing words and the broad ase for cumbersome legal documents are very much needed. It is because of the latter that so many of the guilty escape, that the law is so frequently made the matter of a joke.
