The Gibson teams plan to call otf Hammond folks on 'Thursday and hope to g-et at least one hundred men to join with them and boost the Gibson Association. "OUTLAWED TRAFFIC .BJTNOT DRINK'' Says President of National Model License League Yesterday. LOUISVILLE, JCy.. Nov. 15. "Election returns as a whole do not warrant the sweeping claims made for prohibition by Furley A. Baker, national superintendent of the Anti-Saloon league." says T. M. Gilmore, president of the National Model License league, in a statement issued here. "Missouri and California voted down prohibition by bigr majorities. Most of the Maryland units that voted rejected prohibition, the city of Baltimore" alone giving- a majority above 40.000 against it. Besides, prohibition is a misnomer, anyway. "Mr. Baker said that twenty-four states have now outlawed the 'drink traffic,' but he did not add that they have failed to outlaw drink. The socalled "dry states have not prohibited drink, but merely altered the channels through which the consumer may obtain liquor. This is like outlawing the manufacture and sale of automobiles In a given state but permitting automobiles to be imported from other states and to be used without restriction. "The shipment of liquor in most cases and the carrying of liquor in all cases into these prohibition states are Itefral and with all the vast destruction of property and of revenues the consumption of liquor has never as yet been lessened. Since 1835. shortly after the Anti-Saloon league started its activities, the national per capita consumption of all liquors has increased from 16 gallons to over 20 gallons. Notwithstanding so many states have gone into the prohibition column this year, the consumption of liquors has increased enormously. In the first three months of the present fiscal year the consumption increased about 70,000,000 gallons as compared with the same period last year. "The mail-order channel for supplying liquor, which is the Anti-Saloon league mainstay, floods a commonwealth or a county with far more lkiuor than has ever been sold through local retailers. What profit accrues to Georgia. North Carolina. Alamaba. Tennessee or other states, in exchange for millions of revenues, if the shipments of liquors to such states in proportion to population are greater than such shipments to Any of the license states? "The 'wettest" places in this country, and the hardest to keep sober in. are the so-called 'dry' states and counties, and but for the destruction to private properties, which prohibition brings about, I would deem the liquor trade foolish to oppose. It." BREAK STORE WINDOW A brick was thrown in the window of a small clothing: store at C10 Oakley avenue last night and three sweaters and a girl's dress stolen. Whenever I visited Hammond It always seemed to me as If I was visiting home a ml so I finally made up my mind to live and end my life In the town that was most near to my heart; and so you see, here I am, right in your midst. "I am ready again to serve you, not aIon4 my old friends, but also the general public among whom T cxpet and will try my utmost to make new and lasting friends. I am not going to serve you in the same way as here tofore, but in a new and different rapacity. GARAGE BURNS Fire starting from an unknown source yesterday afternoon, destroyed a storage room and garage in the rear of a Chinese laundry at 700 Honman street. A Chalmers Six auto and a light delivery truck were ruined by the fire and some plumbing fixtures spoiled. Max Schmidt, a plumber who owned the machines and fixtures, estimates his loss at $900. The Hammond fire department saved nearby buildings from being razed by the. blaze. Schmidt was working underneath an automobile when he notice" the blaze. A moment . later tne truck was in flames. Alfred Hess, a steel company contractor, was appointed president of the board of public works, and" several other positions were given to the steel men. Soma Changes, However. Whether Mayor Johnson will command the support of the same interests that backed his race before has not been determined. Some of the mayor's appoint'-es aspire to office. City Attorney Hodges has already told the mayor that he will be in the race for the mayoralty. Gossip has it that Messrs. Hess and Fulton will be in the running for the office of chief executive. Mr. Manlove would like to be treasurer. Will Stand on Record. It Is stated Mr. Johnson will make his race on the achievements of his administration. As the steel corporation is Gary's chief industry and pays more than half the taxes its present or former officials have directed most of tho departments. The mayor is willing that part-of the credit for the achievements of the administration go to himself, but he is willing to concede the bulk of It to his department heads. It is an administration, it will be pointed out, that has been conducted for the welfare of the city and big business can have no complaint. After the mayor withdrew from the gubernatorial race there was some talk that in the event of Mr. Goodrich's election as governor be might receive a fat state office, not only for withdrawing but for the 4.000 majority that Gary was to deliver to Mr. Goodrich. However, subsequents caused Mr. Johnson to aspire to be mayor for four more years.- and that he will maVe a lively campaign is not doubted. f.olden opportunities for J on in TIMF.S Tvunt ail.
