While still running In political channels the publie mind is thinking of the next election and It having been stated democratically, at least semi-off icially. that Mayor Smalley will bt a candidate for re-election, Pr. Pell Is considered a strong opponent. Of course, there has been no Indication that Dr. Pell would consider the nomination and it is too early for any one to approach him on it but republicans, are looking about for tne best avoilable material. A red hot city campaign Is promised. The republicans have any number of issues in mind while tht strongest ar

gument in favor of the present administration Is the good financial condition that, has been maintained by Mayor Smalley despite the handicaps. Instead of receiving. an increase of valuations in the city last spring, of $3,000.000 to $5,000,000 as desired, they remain practically the same and with the two per cent limitation of indebtedness tne city finds Itself in a position unable to build the new city hall or put through a number of desired improvements. The republicans will probably charge the democrats with lack of progressiveness and the latter in rebutal point to the three quarter million dollar sewer project which would have been put through ere now 'nad not the AntiDeep Sewer association thrown it Into court.

CONSTIPATED "California Syrup of Fis" can't harm tender stomach or bowels.

A laxative today saves a sick child tomorrow. Children simply will not take the time from play to empty 'their bowels, which become clogged up with waste, liver gets sluggish; stomach sour. , Look at the tongue, mother! If coated, or your child is listless, cross, feverish, breath bad, restless, doesn't eat heartily, full of coid or has sore throat or any other children's ailment, give a teaspoonful of "California Syrup of Figs," then don't worry, because it is perfectly harmless., and in a few hours alt th's constipation poison, sour bile and fermenting waste will gently move out of the bowels, and you have a well, playful child again. A thorough "inside cleansing" is oftimes all that is necessary. It should be the first treatment given in any sickness. Beware of counterfeit fig syrups. Ask your druggist for a 50-cent bottle of "California Syrup of Figs," which has full directions for babies, children of all ages and for grown-ups plainlyprinted on the bottle. Iook careful'y and see that it is made by the "California Fig Syrup Company." Adv.

HARBOR PROJECT REVIVED (Continued from Page One.)

twice vetoed large appropriation

bills which would have given Illinois state aid to the. Lake Calumet harbor project, The development of Wolf Ijake and

i Lake George on the Indiana side would of course be of greater benefit

to the North township cities, but it Is figured the improvement of Calumet Lake would benefit the Indiana side to some extent, as a result of connecting the proposed Lake Calumet harbor with the Indiana Harbor ship canal through Lake George arid Wolf lake. The canal is dredged westward as far as Calumet avenue in Lake George and the government for the past thirty years has had a deed to a right of way between Lake

Grandmother kept her hair beautifully darkened, glossy and attractive with a brew of Sage Tea and Sulphur. Whenever her hair took on that dull, faded or streaked appearance, this simple mixture was applied with wonderful effect. By asking at any drug store for "Wyeth's Sage ami Sulphur Compound." you will get a large bottle of this old-time recipe. Improved by the addition of other ingredient, all ready to use, for about 00 cents. Thiti simple mixture can be depended upon to restore natural color and beauty to the hair. A well-known downtown druggist says everybody uses Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound now because it darkens so naturally and evenly that nobody can tell it has been applied it's so easy to use, too. You simply dampen a comb or soft brush and draw it through your hair, taking one strand at a time. By mowing the gray hair disappears; after another application or two, it is restored to its natural color and looks glossy, soft and beautiful. This preparation is a delightful toilet requisite. It is not intended for the cure, mitigation or prevention of disease. Adv. George and Wolf Lake. The distance from the latter body of water to the South Chicago branch of the Calumet river emptying into Calumet Lake is only about six miles. The completion of this canal would open the heart of the Calumet district with a water way giving Lake Calumet two Luke Michigan outlets, one by way of the Calumet river and the other by way of the proposed extension of th canal. Th" good shape in which the Calumet river from South Chicago to th-3 forks is testifies to Congressman Mann's power with the appropriation committees to get results for his district. He has always been friendly to the Calumet district on the Indiana side of the state line, and the local boosters feet that as speaker he would give further evidence of his faith in the whole region as the greatest industrial center In the country. Because of this the Calumet region constituents of Congressman Wood expect the latter to establish th closest ca-opiration with the prospective speaker. In the discussions regarding the situation it is pointed out that while the situation is hopeful for the Indiana side of the line, the boosters cannot be satisfied wi'.h that alonf. There

are powerful interests in Chicago whose vision ends at the state line, who do not consider the Calumet region aa a unit, who in fact can say "we have the lake for an Inland harbor, we have a well dredged river from Lake Michigan connecting with this proposed inland harbor; we are independent of you." In the face of such a possible attitude, it is pointed out, there must be a comprehensive program worked out on the Indiana side to Insure co-operation among the cities and with the Illinois side workers. It is confidently expected that one of the first things the new Illinois legislature under Governor Lowden will do .will be to make an appropriation for the Lake Calumet harbor.

ty sheriff. Lew Barnes, would be W. II. Olds of North Baring avenue, excited interest in Faat Chicago. Mr. Olds, who is familiarly known as "Hut." is a man high in the councils of his party and did very effective work in this locality during the late campaign. Not only is he a party worker, but he holds the respect and esteem of the community and men of all parties in the city agree that he would make an ideal man for this appointment.
