FIRE BREAKS- OUT

EAST C A fire broke out right in the heart of the business district of East Chicago about 9:30 o'clock this morning. It was in the Friedman business and tiat building at the corner of Chicago and Forsyth avenues. The corridors and rooms at the north end of the second floor began to fill rapidly with smoke that seemed to ooze out from every crack and crevico in the walls. The fn e department was called and were almost immediately on -the' scene. It was discovered that the fire was between the ceiling of the restaurant kitchen and the floor above. It was consequently necessary to rip up flooring and tear out sections of the walls in order to locate the smouldering flames and get the water where it would be at all effective. Meanwhile residents of the flats on Monday evening elected officers for the ensuing year. Fred Heverenz was elected president, Henry Paebien, vice president: K. Elster. secretary; and Ed F. Pates, treasurer. The board of directors is composed of Albert Gehring, Harney Young, Bert Havill, Kobert Stewart and Martin Henderson. The appeals is male up of J. W.
