Miles Norton of Gary, nor of his able assistants Messrs. Riley, Roberts and Kowler. They realize that Miles Norton is a capable man. but that lie could do little after the mismanagement of the machine in control of ttury affairs. Some (,f the Clary republican leaders long ago got drunk with power. They showed it by breaks and doublecrossing men long in the party's service. Jealousy prompted the knifing- of Dr. Prank W. Smith, the man who put Mayor Tom Knott out of office. Dr. Smith was cheered by the steel gang until the election was over. Then little minds jealous of his possible inlluence with the new mayor set out to undo him. A series of similar acts of t rea c he r y foil o w e d. The people had been promised a "refoim" or at l-?ast a decent government, Conditions soon disturbed members of the Roman and Greek Catholic churches in the foreign quarter. Protests did little good. As a result the foreign clergy and their Hocks of st,-..l workers swore vengeance. They rebuked the machine on Tuesdav and many d-clare that, the suing against Hughes was not so much a matter of liuu or Wilson as it was a. protest against the machine' dictation and local misgoverifirient. The Gary machine kept up his ruthlessness. It got so insolent that the county board of review retaliated by soaking- the steel corporation with higher assessments. in the foreign quarter the people prompted their aldermen to go after the steel company's heat, light and water company. Throughout the county there was rebellion against the machine. The comeback open was to soak the steel trust. Tt got little .sympathy from newKpapei s and other public opinion agencies that had been betrayed or interf. red in public contracts with by the gangsters. nui Kiis com; homk to hcicist, Hut the chickens finally came home to roost and they did on Tuesday when Gary, considered the republican Gibraltar of Indiana, showed that it had been genes a led by a lot of windbags. That Gary still has several thousand republicans is not to be denied, but they simply rebelled and the chances are the steel workers will stay in rebellion until after city election. They desire to rebuke the machine and place a democratic mayor in the saddle many think. AS TO DK MOCK ATS. On the other hand the excellent showing made by the Gary democrats and the fall down of the liammor-d democracy probably will change things. Chairman Kinerty and his lieutenants point out that they have -done fine work in having an organization that bucked the republican party and the steel trust and practically wiped out a republican majority of 5,000. They will demand that Gary not Hammond dictate northern Indiana reaeral plums. How this will affect Ex-Mayor Lawrence Pecker of Hammond, now solicitor of the treasury at Washington at a salary of $5,ano a year, is not known. But the Gary democrats plan that if Hammond, now republican, can have several appointments and a $5.000 a year job in the present administration then Gary must have much more in Mr. Wilson's second administration. Whether any of the Gary lawyers will demand Mr. Pecker's piece of pie is not known. They would be willing, however, to let him have It if Gary is taken care of. HliORIitMZATItlV OF O. P. From many parts of the county there are demands that the clary republicans select a new leader, keep away from the trust dictation and above all avoid slag in county politics or else the inevitable will ensue. Reports from Indianapolis are to the effect that an official of the state-committee and a representative of Governor-elect Goodrich will come to Lak county soon to read the riot act.

It is generally believed that ! on Tammany Hall will fall the hardest Idow since from the dawn of election day. the president's friends had a hunch that the Wiisonites would knife Wilson. A tremendous city majority which Tammany had promised Wilson failed dismally to realize. Of scarcely less interest among politicians today than discussion o Hughes apparent defeat, though carrying NewYork, Indiana and Illinois, was what happened in California. It was agreed that Hughes must have suffered a tremendous cutting there, since Governor Hiram Johnson, senatorial nominee and idol of the progressives, ran nearly 300,Pastime Today FIVE ACT BLUE BIRD FEATURE j Featuring ! The White Flour Pinch" have you felt it? With the advancing price of wheat "the five-cent loaf is doomed," say the bakers. In its place we have the six-cent loaf in many cities only the tencent loaf. A loaf of white flour bread is not a complete ration. However wholesome and pure, it does not supply all the proteids the human body needs. In Shredded Wheat Biscuit you have all the body-building nutriment in the whole wheat grain prepared in a digestible form. It is always the same price, always the same high quality. Eat it for breakfast with milk or cream or with fruits. Made at Niagara Falls, N. Y. 000 ahead of him. Apparently the progressives threw most of thier strength to Wilson, all of which recalled to the republicans today the direful predictions which were made at the time of Governor Hughes' campaign in California, due to the kidnaping of the nominee by a republican faction which sought to "freeze out" the progressives. Counting California' entire vote for Wilson, his total iu the electoral college, disregarding states in which there still remained a doubt as to the outcome, sppeared today to reach 169 three more than necessary. Hughes apepars to have 23 votes. Three states were still in doubt, Minnesota. New Mexico and New Hampshire, but their total electoral vote of 19 would not be sufficient to elect Hughes, unless the republican nominee gained more than out of California's vote on a split in that state. Moreover the vote from approximately one-half the state of New Mexico gave Wilson a lead pf more than 6,000.
