FELS SUBSIDY ENDED, SING LET AXERS SHIFT FOR SELVES

Abandonment by Mrs. Mary Fels cf her husband's plan of subsidizing Eingletax activity in America has thrown the singletaxers upon their own resources. Some kind of an association will be formed, it is announced, to take the place of the Fels Fund Commission, which goes out of existence on January 1. The late Joseph Fels, millionaire soap manufacturer, selected a commission to work for the ideals of Henry George and agreed to double all the money that the commission was able to raise by subscription. He actually gave much more than this, his bounty ranging from $30,000 to $75,000 a year. This was spent in t?.x reform campaigns, chiefly in wtrtem states, and in general educational efforts. Fred d. Howe and Lincoln Steffens, authors; Charles H. Irgersoll, watch manufacturer: Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, suffrage leader; George A.. Briggs of Indiana, Jackson H. Ralston of Washington,
late Tom L. Johnson were members of the commission. Daniel Kiefer of Cincinnati has been chairman and active head. Mrs. Fels continued her husband's plan for two years before concluding that time was ripe for a change. She said it was time for the singletaxers of America to choose their own leaders and also expressed the belief that large gifts from a single source had a tendency to deaden the sense of responsibility of the rank and file. She will continue to give for sine-letax objects, but in accordance- with her own judgment and without taking organic responsibility for the movement. The members of the commission have been constituted an organization committee for a national singletax league, adding Benjamin Doblin of New York. Francis I. da Pont of Delawire. Otto Cullman of Chicago and W. S. U'Ren, for many years a progressive leader in Oregon,

F1NERTY HEftHS JfflM WILSON Democratic County Chairman is Thanked for His Work.
Democratic County Chairman Finerty of Gary received the following telegram yesterday from President Wilson: "I thank you heartily for the splendid work done by you and by all the workers in the cause of progressive principles at issue in this campaign. "The fight is won, I fully believe, though I take this means of urging you to renewed exertions and vigilance to see that belated efforts to
confuse the public judgment do not succeed. "Our country is prosperous, secure and happy; and its prosperity is upon a sound basis. After War Protection Amurrd. "Steps to protect our commerce and industry in any emergency after the European war ends have been taken. "The anti-dumping clause of the socalled war revenue act provides the executive with ample power to prevent the "dumping" of European surplus manufacturers upon our market. "The tariff commission will shorjtly be appointed and at work to provide, the facts which will determine what other legislation is necessary or desirable. "I need not add that the federal reserve act is a guaranty against panics, and that the federal trade commission will aid, as it already has helped, to preserve the stability of our domestic and foreign commerce. Votes o I-onaer ("nn lie Bench t. "I am confident that the time has passed in America when votes can b9 bought, the ballot b?x defiled by corrupt practices, or the judgment of the. Ajne.rlca.ri people determined or influenced in any way by the use of money. "It is. however, our duty to take every precaution lest conscienceless agents of the sinister forces working in opposition to progressive principles and popular government resort in their desperation to industrial co
ercion or the evil and insidious practices of a decade and more ago. "WOOD ROW WILSON."
