CAMPAIGN FOR SAFETY FIRST

A shop laborer on his way home the ther day undertook to crawl under a car, taking: with him a sack of flour. A switch engine moved and he waa killed. This happened on the Northern I'aciflc railway. In Hammond every day scores of men and boys cut through, and. some crawl under, Iodk freights and long lines of box cars. It la a focl-hardy habit that sooner or later will result in a, death. Christmas afternoon at his home, 3 State street, of Bright's disease. He will be buried Sunday afternoon following services in Neidow's chapel. Rev. Weil will speak. Hessler followed Peter Mak as president of the viallage and served two terms of office during troublous times. He was 65 years old.

Mr. Ripp was 60 years old and was first taken ill about four months ago. His condition has been critical for several weeks, during which time nis health failed rapidly. Besides a wife he is survived by four children Mrs. Joseph Scherer, Charles, Frieda and Louise Ripp. Members of the Moltke

According to Park Superintendent Peter Fox this morning vandals invaded "Goose island" at Harrison park some time last night and, not satisfied

with stealing one of the valuable Chinese ducks, killed one of bis prize geese, Mr. Fox made a thorouRh search of the neighborhood and found a number of footprints leading front the island towards the railroad tracks. It is thought that the. culprits live at Kast Hammond.

DEATH OF LOUIS RIPP.

Louis Ripp, one of Hammond's pioneer and respected citizens, died at the family residence, 430 Sib'ey street, shortly after 10 o'clock this morning following an illness extending over a period of six months. He was proprietor of a butcher shop at Hoffman and Cedar streets and has been a resident of thic city during the past 24 years. I Funeral services will be held from ' the residence Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The Rev. Hoefer will officiate and the Moltke lodge, I. O. O. F., of which he was a member, will have

charge of the arrangements. Interment

will occur at Oak Hill cemetery.
