BLAZE WIPES OUTSTRUCTURE (Continued from page one.) the firemen know is that when they reached the scene the Are was blazing briskly in the grocery, while It had not spread to the rest of the building. There was one loud explosion during the progress bf the fire, caused either
by whisky or the gasoline tank the
hall in the auditorium building being lighted with gasoline. At 2 o'clock this mornig Mrs. Barney Cohen, widow of the late Barney Cohfen who with Michael Cohen built and owned the building, was aroused by the smell of smoke. She had barely time to arouse her four children, gather them about her and flee to the hall, before the flat was so filled .with smoke that the atmosphere was suffocating.. Barefooted, without a garment other than their night clothes about them, they made their way through the blindintr smoke down the stairway to
the street. They ran across the street and aroused the Louis Zimmerman! who occupy" a flat across the street from the Auditorium. Mrs. Cohen and the children, the eldest of whom is only thirteen and.the'youngest, a baby Cecil, Isador, Lloyd and Erwln,
were badly frightened, and together with the nervous shock caused by the fright, and their "exposure to the cold, were shaking terribly when they entered the Zimmerman-domicile.' Mrs. Cohen is in a state of collapse this morning. She could not speak of her loss and the horror that accompanied it, without tears. "We lost everything. My poor children had, to igo out In the cold night barefooted
and in their night clothes, and so did I. "There was not even time to gather our clothes together, much less to put
them on,' salJ she,. J. W. Brlssey sleeps in his law offices and he was aroused Just In time to make his escape. He managed to save a few papers and his typewriter, but his office furniture including an eighty dollar desk, and his entire law library, which represented considerable of an investment, were de
stroyed.
The Btock and fixtures In the Auditorium Bar and Barrett's grocery were complete losses. . ? . . The building, as It stands today, would not net the owners $100. It Is completely gutted, i The roof has fallen as have also the floors, the west wall is two-thirds down and the walls still standing will have to be pushed down for, safety. What was until yesterday the show building of Indiana Harbor Is today a heap of smoking ruins, broken and blackened brick and charred - timbers. It was Impossible to learn ; this morning the extent of the loss and the
amount of insurance carried. Michael Cohen said he did not know how much was being carried on either building or stock. It is known however that the combined loss will approximate anywhere from $105,000 to $115,000. W.
J. Barrett, the grocer, who next the
Cohens, was the greatest loser, esti
mates his loss at $12,000 with insurance at $6,000. The building itself was
valued at $75,000. The Auditorium Bar
was fitted up with expensive fixtures
and carried an immense stock, so the loss in this connection is considerable.
this to say nothing of the damage to furniture, sustained by Mrs. Barney
Cohen. In her flat, and the other losses
sustained by tenants. Ed Levine whose store is next door to the Auditorium, was unable to estimate his loss,' 'but this is known to have been considerable. The Auditorium was three stories and basement and was of brick construction. It was built in 1907 by Michael and the late Barney Cohen Jointly.
