Joe Tinker is getting closer and closer to Chicago every day. By that we mean that each day the prospects for Joe's return to Cubland looks brighter. Yesterday's sunlight was the ' brightest of all. and before the day was over President Charles V. Murphy of the Cubs wrote to Garry Herrmann of ! the Cincinnati club and asked permission to talk with Tinker. He expects a reply today or tomorrow. The bright part of the Tinker deal, as far as Chicago Is concerned, de- ' veloped yesterday when from Cincinnati it was learned that the board of directors of that club had. at a meeting, failed to ratify the deal recently promulgated by Garry Herrmann with President Ebbets of the Brooklyn club. During the day Herrmann was forced to wire Ebbets and Inform him that his

board of directors had failed to uphold ' him in makinjr the recent deal. Herrmann then asked Brooklyn to figure in a deal whereby they' give up some -valuable players for the demon shortStopper, but as Brooklyn is not anxious to part with any of her valuable warriors the prospect of a deal with the Dodders Is not likely. The Dodgers need all of their good men. Herrmann was threatened by the board of directors of his club with the most signal disgrace to which an active big league executive has ever been called upon to submit. decision. Dundee was able ta set away to a flying start because his style of fight ing was new to Griffiths, as the little Italian, by leaping into the air, made up for lack of reach. Griffiths let Dundee do the forcing throughout, but did clever work on the defense and was able to land his blows frequently. His punch, however, was lacking, as com pared to Dundee's. The Akron fighter was much the cooler of the two and at no stage seemed worried. Dundee played hard for the body and succeeded in inflicting considerable punishment with his kid ney swings, but Griffiths was there with the hooks, swings and Jabs to the face In return. Either Dundee or Griffiths will fight the winner of the Matty Baldwin-Phil Brock battle at Akron Thursday. MICHIGAN ELEVEN TO PLAY HARVARD Wolverines' Request That Game Be Set for Oct. 31 Agreed to by Crimson. Ann Arbor, Mich.. Dec. 16. Mich gan will meet Harvard on the gridiron for the third time in history on October 31, 1914. The other games were played in 1881 and 1S95. A telegram was received today from Fred V. Moore, graduate treasurer of the Harvard Athletic association, stat ing that the date of October 31, sug eested by Michigan in preference to October 24, was satisfactory and would be held open pending the approval of the Harvard athletic committee. This means that only minor details are left to demand the attention of the contracting universities, as it is known that the message went from here last Saturday night contained Michigan's acceptance of the V invitation if the game could be staged on October 31, the date refused by Chicago. , CONSTRUCT LINKS AT, COLLEGE New Study Added Feature to University of Illinois Curriculum. Golf course construction is to be an added feature to the curriculum of the department of horticulture at the University of Illinois, and In furtherance of this scheme the . university will shortly acquire enough land to permit i of the installation of an eighteen-hole ! course. RITCHIE-MURPHY BOUT ON AGAIN FORaAN. 23 San Francisco, Dec. 16. Willie Ritchie and Harlem Tommy Murphy were last night matched to box twenty rounds for the world's lightweight championship on the night of January 23. The lightweights will box for James Coffroth under the same terms as those which governed the battle that was called off because of Ritchie's sore nose. Ritchie is to receive $15,000 guarantee with a privilege of 50 per cent of the gross receipts, and Murphy will split the remainder of the receipts with Coffroth. The men will weigh 135 pounds on hour before ringtime. MIKE GIBBONS BATTERS HIRST Philadelphia, Pa., Dec 16. Mike Gibbons, the St. Paul welterweight, gave Joe Hirst of this city a bad beating in a six-round" bout at the Olympia A. A. last night- Gibbons' stalling was all that allowed Hirst to stay the limit After the second round Mike had many opportunities' to put away the local lad, but when Joe showed signs of distress Gibbons always managed bo that his punches missed their mark by light margins.
