GEORGE M. EDER, President. December 6, 1913. BOX CAR ROBBERS , ACTIVE Two box car thieves were caught In trap at Durham," tn the Lake Shore yesterday afternoon and arrested later m the day by Indiana Harbor officers. They gav their names as John St. James Kelly of Denver and PatrTcU Welsh of Norwood, Boston. Mass. Lake Shore detectives spied the two men when the trairfc stopped lor water at ..Durham- They had broken into one care and were passing from It to another car which tUffy broke Into and entered. The detectives waited 'until the men were occupied Inside and then with their little h&Tnimers and a few nails they nailed tfe door uf the box car shut and the thieves were a ssecurely captured to all intent and purposes, as though locked In the tower of London. After telling the men inside tq cheer up, the worst was yet to come, one. of the detective hied him to the nearest telephon. and called up the Indiana Harbor Lake Shore freight house," notl lying the force there of the pleasant surprise they had "in store for them. The freight house telephoned the Indl ana Harbor notice; -1 telling Serireant Hughes that the train on which the thieves were prisoners was due at 4:45 oclock and. asking that officers be sent to make th arrests. ; Sergeant Hughes dispatch d; Officers- Lneionr and Sano to. th. freight depot; to make tha arrest. The -door was. pried open and the prisoners placed under arrest. They made no resistance and when searched. nothing was found on them - of . any value. A box -f merchandise had been pried open, and that. was the extent of the evidence against, them. Kelly, when asked what line he us ually followed, declared he was a co ment worker ancj, welsh said he was a laborer. Breaking the seal of a car, In transit. whether the thieves get away with any goods or not, now constitutes a felony under a recent bill passed by. the' legis lature, and is punishable by Imprisonment lh thes state' penitentiary, so the outlook for "Kelly and Welsh Is far from encouraging. ; The men are re spectable looking fellows, and by their appearance would seem to be new at their rade. SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL At -a special meetins of the city council held at the East Chicago .city hall, appropriation ordinances were passed as follows: Street and alley labor, $3,500. Sewer department, $1,000. Electrlct lights,- $1,200. Police department $3,000. These should have, been attended to at the last regular meeting Monday, night, but the failure of a Quorum prevented, so it ras neces sary for Mayor Schlfeker to call a spe cial meeting of the council. Mrs. B. D. L. Glazebrook of Indiana Harbor, was elected to fill the vacancy on the library board, created by the resignation of Mrs. Fred Stephens, and Walter Spencer was named to succeed D,; D. Dixon on th-v school board. Mr, Dixon also resigned. At his borne this morning no reason was given for the resignation. Mrs. Stephens however said her resignation was on iccount of other duties, which made it almost im possible to attend the board meetings and she felt that she could not do the library board work justice, in conse quence. She regretted the necessity of resigning and will be missed on the board. Mr. Dixon has been a member of the school board for quite a number of years but Is away a great deal, and while this was not the reason assigned. for his resignation, undoubtedly had something to do with it. AN APPEAL BY THE POSTMASTER During the Christmas rush patrons of the Indiana Harbor and? East Chi cago postofflces are requested to help out the departments by seeing to the insurance of their packages, which they wish to mail, before the time of mailing such packages. The insurance of packages in the parcel post takes the place of the old registration and cards must be filled out for the same. It will greatly fa cilltate matters If these cards are applied for and filled before the Christ mas rush, and by the same token, any one with insurance cards to attend to at the time of the rush will greatly hamper the expeditious handling of the holiday mall. One person with such work to do will keep an entire line waiting, thereby blocking progress greatly. HOME MISSIONARY WORK PROGRAM Home missionary work that should appeal to all kindly disposed people Is being carried on by the Woman's Home Missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal church, Indiana Harbor, at this time. At the regular meeting of the organisation which will be held this evening at the church parlors, a pleasant feature of this work will be done, the work taking the form of making Christmas stockings for a group of from 30 to . 50 youngsters of all nationalities whom Miss Lynn and some of the teachers have banded Into a little club j JT"! - s7& Cnres !a I to $ ay KCTTp i " C.Vo po"a'i J IJ JliUTT J Tl maybeusedfullstrenttb rantd Dot t. John ston and the Methodist church as their special pets. - For 'the most part they come from homes where there is liable to be but little Christmas cheer, and the ladies of the Home Missionary so ciety, thought It would be a kindly plan to arrange a little pleasure for them. In - accordance with this idea then. every woman of the congregation has been asked to attend tonight's meeting, armed with darning needle and scissors and prepare to sew stockings galore for filling With Christmas goodies. In addition to the work there will be a small program and ligit refreshments and a silver offering. CONGRESS PLAYING CARPS GIVEN AWAY WITH TUXEDO The American .Tobacco company Is, in literal trutn, giving all smokers a chance for a new deal.. As you will notice, if you watch the newspaper advertisements and the signs In the "dealers' windows, you can get a beautiful pack of . gold edged Congress playing cards free .with -every ninety cent lass humidor of Tuxedo smoking tobacco. These cards are . the well known brand made by the U. S. Playing Card company and retailing everywhere for fifty cents a pack. Nothing like starting an evening's social play with a nice clean new deck of these wellknown cards; especially -Jn a mixed party, for the ladles always appreciate new cards to play with. The makers of Tuxedo emphasize the fact, in giving away these cards, that Tuxedo Is really a "home smoke" and can be smoked in the presence of ladles without giving offence. It has long been the boast of Tuxedo men that it is the only tobacco that can be smoked In a closed room without leaving traces of odor in the lace curtains, furnishings, etc. The experiment has often been tried and housewives testify that there Is none of the "deadness" generally noticed in the air, but that only a mild fragrance remains from the tobacco smoke of the night before. The men who intend to surprise their little social card parties with these new decks of Congress cards are advised to take early advantage of the free offer, for the offer is qualified by the statement "while the supply lasts."
