SCHAAF BUYS SITE ON STATE STREET (Continued from page one.) surprising demand for it.' Hastings, Woods & Company gave two options on their! option in one day, each for a few hours only, and the property was finally sold to Schaaf. The campaign in favor, of a "Greater Business District" is having a tremendous effect in Hammond. It now sems certain that State street will be built up all or the day to Sohl street In the next, two or three years -and Hohman street will be built up south to Douglas street. Tenant merchants are determined to get away from excessive rents by owning their own store sites and the investor Is taking advantage of present low values to buy choice inside property. Hastings, Woods & company now ex pect to concentrate their attention on the sale of the 100 feet of Hohman street frontage at the corner of Hoh man and Russell street, belonging to the Hammond Realty company. This property is on the market at $100 a front foot less than the present market price. With the completion of the Knoerier building, the certainty that the Jarneckes will erect a three story building just south of the broken corner next spring and other activi ty in that vicinity Hohman street is attracting a great deal of attention. The sale of the State street frontage to Schaaf, who has large banking interests in a number of the cities of Lake county, indicates his faith In a continuance of local prosperity, no matter what conditions are elsewhere in the region. It is also significant that although Schaaf has most of his business interests in East Chicago, Whiting and Robertsdale that he should select Hammond as the place for his first purchase of high-grade busines property. "The Business District Must Expand," seemes to be taking hold of the public to an extent that means a splendid and 'much needed growth of down town Hammond in the next few years.
