Girl Is Recovering. Pretty 17-year-old Janette Brueckner, 179 Michigan avenue, who attempted to commit suicide last Friday afternoon, when she raised the contents of a "vial of carbolic acid to her lips and drained the contents, is still confined to her bed at the home of her sister and is reported gradually improving this morning. She will recover. The girl, it is said, purchased the acid a week ago with the intention of drinking it. Following an argument with her sister last Friday afternoon she carried out her plan. She was fearfully burned from the deadly effects of the acid and it was only a heroic f.ght against death that Dr. A. Young was able to save her life. Despondency is thought to have been the reason for her rash act.

Ready in Fortnight. With the arrival of the switchboard this week the installation of Hammond's new electric police signal system is expected to be completed in two weeks, providing there is no further delay in the arrival of material. This was the announcement that was made at the central station this morning. A force of workmen is now busily engaged laying cable and stringing wires and the . finishing touches are expected to be completed today. .

The Hammond team had no show against the accurate Gary team and lost three straight games. Peletier and Imus did the stellar work for the Gary team, while Kelson did most of the good work for the Hammond boys. From the start to the finish the Hammond team had no chance, as they could not find the alleys and the Gary team won over them by a large margin. Kelson will play the Gary team again. . The scores of the games were as follows: Gary 843, 822, 902; total. 2.617. Hammond 803, 841. 721; total. 2,415.

Dies in Hospital. William J. Duncan, president of the cigarmakers' union of Hammond, died at St. Margaret's hospital Sunday morning following a short illness. Death is attributed to pneumonia. Yesterday afternoon the remains were shipped to his former home at Morris, 111., where funeral services and Interment will occur. Mr. Duncan was 27 years old and had been a resident of Hammond during the past two years. He was employed at the Ia Vendor cigar factory and was well known and respected.

Mrs. McElroy Recovering. A slight change for the better is noticed in the condition of Mrs. McElroy, the stricken wife of Prof. Frank D. McElroy, of the Hammond high school. Mrs. McElroy was taken suddenly ill a week ago today. It is now believed that she will recover from the stroke of paralysis.
