Bet by the great Secretary of State himself? If we are to Judge from a
Washington despatch to The Sun thl
imitative idea appears to have hit the Peoria editor with such force that he
communicated its brilliancy to Rep
representative Stone of Illinois:
'Persons who have read the letter (to Mr. Stone) say that Mr. rindell proposed in the letter to the Peoria member of Congress a plan by which, they should collaborate in the matter of making recommendations for postmasters f in that Congressional district. It . is said that Mr. Pindell proposed that each postmaster recommended should be instructed to act as the agent practically of -Mr. Findell's newspaper In his particular locality, presumably to take suscrlptiona and forward them, to make collections, and generally become useful in promoting the interests "of the newspaper." No surprise should be now express
ed as to why the master cherished to his bosom so keen a competitor for business to such a degree that he wished to export this adept pupil to foreign lands for at least year. Mocking birds should not p-erch too near to a cash register. -New, York Sun.
OUR WISE PRESIDENT. Eastern editor remarks that President Wilson has been subject to less
criticism than any of his predecessors.
Mr. Wilson is wise. The doings of his secretary of state are sufficient to draw the fire of the critics and with such a superb buffer the man in the white house manages to go through the blaze unscatched.

The main road, the old Sauk Trail,
was the route selected by the topo-ljjjg
grapners. 1 nis route extends tnrough Brown's Corners, about a mile south
of Chicago Heights. At this point
the Chicago branch of the highway
extends north through Chicago
Heights.
Through a misapprehension the officials of the Lincoln Highway Association, answered in the affirmative a query from Chcago Heights asking If the highway passed through that city, and asked the Chicago Heights
people to so mark It.

MASTER AND THE PUPIL.
When the history of American Journalism comes to be written a separate volume should be devoted to the works and methods of Messrs. Bryan and Pindell. They belong to a new ' school, or rather it would be more correct to say that they are the illustrious joint founders of a school that unites the ideals of practical statesmanship with the arduous task of progressive publishers in the opening era of new freedom. Messrs. Bryan and Pindell must be treated together in one volume for the very
same reason that In the study of any
the Lincoln Highway north through great age of art tne master is made to
their town and west again on the lit
tle used and poorly improved "North
road."
Of course this is a mistake. The route follows the direct route over the South road. This road is being
improved fast and has been designat
ed as a state and road. It is probable the highway commissioners will make this road from Dyer to Frankfort one of the finest of the. links in
the great national highway.
It is three miles shorter than the route now marked through Chicago Heights and If it is made into a six
teen foot, well crowned, rolled and oiled macadam road all the powers could
not divert the traffic to the longer
and impossible road to the north.
The south road is shorter, has bet
ter grades and less dangerous cross
ings. It is the logical road and the
error in location must be adjusted.
Our Chicago Heights friends will
be on the Chicago branch and will not suffer greatly by surrendering good naturedly to what, after all, is the logical and must be the ultimate
route. Joliet Herald. ;
show his profound influence over his most distinguished pupil. Was there ever more perfect mimicry of the practical ideals of the Commoner than the alleged methods of the Peoria Journal? The only query is as to whether or not the pupil has not surpassed the master In his workaday aspirations. But that there has been a striking affinity of the soul between the cash drawer in Lincoln, Neb., and the cash drawer in Peoria, 111., 13 beyond question.
