'We have no plans for closing any of our plants. Individual mills or furnaces may. be temporarily closed from time to time if business condi tions compel, but any such question will be considered and-decided If and when it arises. . ,1 hope business will improve, but I have no special information on which I could base an opinio a.. Judge Gary refused to say anything of th allegations made by Thomas W. Lawscn, but it can be stated that the quetsloa of passing or cutting the divi dend on the common stock has not com up at directors' meetings. The steel corporation now has a sur plus of between $306,000,000 and 8400.000.000, and has 875.000,000 in bank. It was pointed out that the corporation has earned 8110,900,000 so far this year and that depreciation, fixed charges and dividends call for 880.000,000. Investigation of the insinuation that th directors and officers of tha corporation uts inside knowledge and speculate la th company' shares re vealed that th quarterly statements of earning ar not received by Judge Gary until 1 o'clock on the day on which, -they are made public. From. 1 to 2 o'clock th ehairman goes over the figures, making allowance for fixed' charge and depreciations. At 8 o'clock they ar given to th Finance Commit tee, which analyse the statement for an hour and then turns it ever to the board of directors. Shortly after 3 o'clock, usually about 3:30, they are released trf the newspapers. Reports that the Gary plan would b shut down were undoubtedly due to the falling oft ef new business In the steel trade.' . .
