Knotts, mayor of Gary, who was defeated for re-election last Tuesday, was in Indianapolis yesterday calling on state house officials and visiting with politicians at the Denison hotel. Mayor Knotts attributed his defeat to the ateel company, declaring that 3.500 men were laid off at the steel plant on Thursday before the election and told that if Knotts was elected they would not be permitted to return to work, but that if he was defeated they could come back as soon as the election was over. "I have spent $50,000 since I have been mayor," said Mr. Knotts, "and if I had been re-elected 1 probably would have spent ' $10,000 or $15,000 more during my next term. So I suppose it's best for me to get out.
