"Jlm,.my" Sheldon, for eight years coach of ; the Indiana university football squad, ! surprised the student body last night in the announcement that he had ; handed In his resignation to President i William Lowe Bryan and Dr. C. J. Sembower, head of the Indiana ath

letic committee. Sheldon came to Indiana in 1905 and previous to that time was a star end on one of Coach Stogg's elevens at Chicago. Indiana never turned out a winning team until Sheldon took charge, and this fact has endeared him to the entire student body.

Chicagoan Outpointed by Minnesota Boy. Superior. Wis., Nov. 12. Johnny Tillman of Minneapolis last night outpointed Jimmy Murphy of Chicago In eight out of ten rounds and finished with a margin over the aggressive Chicago boxer. Murphy forced the milling, but lacked the class of his opponent.' The bout was fast and full of hard hitting. Jack Whitaker of Superior and Kid Coffey of Depere drew in the eemi-wlndup, and Young Nelson of Superior knocked out Art Godfrey of Minneapolis In the preliminary.

Minneapolis. Minn., Nov. 12. The Minnesota football team will play the crucial game of the season against Chicago on Saturday without the services of its captain, Donald Aldworth. Although the official sources of information have been closed tightly by Coach Williams, it became known yesterday that the Gopher leader has had a recurrent attack of rheumatic fever and is confined to his bed. Aldworth appeared in togs this week and took part in the signal practice, but did not appear in scrimmage. The coach had hoped to tide him over for the Chicago contest, but Aldworth probably will be out for the rest of ths

season. Fournier, who was put out of

the Wisconsin game for rough play,

may play left end. Fournier has not

been in good shape this week and his place at practice last night was taken by Fegan. McAlmon, who was absent from practice Monday night, supposedly on account of illness, was back. He will lead the Gophers for the rest of the year. Practice was of the grueling variety. The men were given a hard scrimmage by the scrubs. It is estimated that 1,000 seats for the game are in the hands of scalpers, and the athletic authorities are uniting with the police in an attempt to enforce the anti-scalping law passed last year. So far there have been no arrests. More than 10,000 persons from outside the Twin Cities will attend the game. The Northwest is aflame over the approaching battle. Manager McBean expects a record crowd of 22,000. A Chicago game has not attracted as much advance interest and aroused as much enthusiasm in a decade. The students are talking a lot, but betting little. They are afraid of the score sheet for the season, which seems to give the Maroons an advantage in the dope.

RENSSELAER

IS COMING SATURDAY (Special to Tki Times.) " . ' Rensselaer, Ind.,' Nov. 12. Coach

Parker Is putting the finishing touches on the high school football team, which 1b to go to Hammond next Saturday to play the strong team of that city. Hammond's strength is measured

by the fact that It placed a tie game

ith Morocco at Morocco, the score be

ing 6 to 6. A comparative Idea of the strength of the teams can be arrived

at by the fact that both Morrocco and

Rensselaer defeated Chicago Heights by overwhelming scodFs.

The absence of Paul Miller from th

practice for the past week has interrupted the back field considerably, but his return has put new steam in the home team and great hojnj of victory is evidenced.

On Thanksgiving Rensselaer will

entertain a Chicago team, the Bowen high school, and another good contest is expected.

PELKY Ai BURNS VISITJN CHICAGO

Former Champion's Pro-

tege to Meet Gunboat Smith.

Tommy Burns .former heavyweight champion, brought his candidate for the championship, Arthur Pelkey, into town yesterday for a few hours. They were on the way from Chatham, Ont.. to Calgary, leaving at 6:30 last evening for the second named Canadian city. From there they will go on to San Francisco as soon as they get word from Promoter Jim Coffroth. Burns has matched Pelkey for a twenty-round fight with Gunboat Smith, but Coffroth has yet to pick the date. Burns suspects the mill will take place on New Tear's afternoon, and asserts that the winner will be the undisputed white heavyweight champion. He makes this statement without regard for the feelings of Jess Willard. Carl Morris and Frank Moran. It has been six years and over since

Burns was in Chicago. On that visit

he was here with the moving pictures of his second fight with Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, the battle he won, and on which he based his championship claims. Burns boxed nightly with

George Memslc, then a challenger for

Joe Cans' title, after the pictures had been flashed before the eyes of the fans. - After a Jaunt with the pictures Burns went west and stopped BUI

Squires, the Australian champion, in a

round. Then he sailed for Europe, where he whaled the best, and to Aus

tralia. John Artha Johnson finally cornered him down below at Sydney and took the title away from him in fourteen rounds. Burns has done some

battling since, but is a manager pure

and simple now and claims he has the coming champion in Pelkey, because,

he claims, Arthur has something the

other hopes do not possess, a knockout wallop. Gunboat Smith no doubt will
