VELVET GOWNS IV ORAM) ARRAY, lly Maude Hall. New York, Xov. 6. Velvets have changed so radically from what they

were a generation ago, that they j

scarcely seem like the same fabife. "When the matrons of the. present day made their debut Into society a couple of decades since their mothers wore costumes In the height of fashion it they wore velvet that stood alone or were so warm that they afforded the comfort of most of the coats of our time.

Velvets are just as popular now as

then, but such different velvets they are soft, supple, delicate to the touch

an a delight to the eye. The woman who wishes, to invest in a velvet costume this season need give no though of its appropriateness of development; for there are so many frilled skirts and peplum blouses in this material as there are of silks, crepe de chene of satin. The chiffon velvets are amotiR the prettiest and softest of the new effects. They are combined with "satin and chiffon in many indescribably pretty ways. The floral printed velvets are picturesque to a degree and are a wonderful aid to the women who revels in youthful modes. A stunnia- afternon dress la carried

out in flowered chiffon velvet, the

skirt being built . with two ruffles about a foundation of the same material. At the side there is the Inevitable slit, but it is modified by an inserted panelette of accordion plaited satin that' adds beauty to the model which elevating it to the plain of severest

dfsrnity. It is not that refined women of conservative taste object so much to the slit skirt as to its abuse in wearins. Exasperated effects continue, but the best houses are now encourajrins them. Sartorial sensationalists predict their reign throughout the winter and

even into the coming spring, but this it a moot question. What would happen if this mode retained its popularity until next summer and materialized in sheer lawns, batistes and other semttransparents materials, is too eciting- to anticipate. Happily tnis season is so far away that two or three "furores" have an opportunity to be developed In

More of our flowered chiffon velvet, however. The bodice Is a model of

simplicity, although the flfrured mater

ial gives it a more or less elaborate effect. There Is a little vest of exquisite lace, dashed with a bit of lovely embroidery and folded over this vest is k fichu of plaited net, veiled with dark chiffon. The shoulders are of the drooped effect and the sleeves are finished In convential fashion, though here Is where one usually exercises no little originality. Iace and embroidery vests figure prominently on frocks for formal occasions and the very dainty shadow designs are giving way to heavier lace,

sometimes outlined with narrow bands of fur. Corduroy and striped effects are prominent among the velvets nsed for street costumes and tailor mades. Un

usually smart designs are made in onepiece, but often the vest is introduced in novel ways, elongated ends extending balow the waistlines being: a favorite mode Just now. Where the vest is merged into the neck, especially if the neck is cut Vshapel, opportunity is given for many novel finishes In the wy of small revers tunnel back and lined with bright silks. Sometimes these revers are of the dress material, and again they are of contrasting fabric. There Is nothing more durable than a corduroy velvet dress. If well made it meets nearly all of the lemanls made

upon the woman whose social engagements do not plunge her into rigid formality. The corded effects also

Wear better than the plain velvets and

velveteens and do not show dust as

quickly, though these is sufficient to complain of in this direction regard

ing velvets of all kinds.

Never was so much attention paid to

ligue as this year. A frock in which

this feature is especially emphasized is noted for ts naturalness and grace; it

makes the figure appear slightly thrown forward below the waist, but It

is hot at all In an extreme manner.

This is the outline favored by the most

eclectic rartsiennes and It is as much

appreciated by artists as by women of

fashion. It Is a wonder indeed that sashes have not lost their vogue, since they have been worn so extensively and in such exaggerated forms, in many instances. Yet they remain among the most important features of winter dresses. They are cleverly wound around the waist and hips, not drawn quite tight, but sufficiently dining to display the line of bust and hips. In many instances they are tied In a Jap

anese bow Just below the waist, the ends then being wound around the lower limbs. The waist and hips are moulded by the sash and the ends are tied in a loose knot very low down at the back, this bow forming an elabor

ate trimming for the dress.

Many of the toilettes boasting thess sheses are made of crepe dechine, satin chiffon velvet and the brocaded effect

with soft, supple backgrounds.
