Canopy signs extending over lloh-

man street sidewolks in downtown Hammond are found objectionable by business men who have started a move

ment to bring about their removal. Censure is directed towards the De

luxe theatre and Hotel Majestic can

opy signs in that they obstruct a ped

estrian's view of Hohman street's new

ornamental lights. Unless the contin

uous effect be unbroken it is claimed that the lights will not be a success.

Framchlne Expire.

Kast State street has a uniform effect," said one business man, "and Hohman street must have the same. There is "a pole at Russel street which obtrudes and it should come down. Though the Majestic and Deluxe have had permission for the signs they now constitute a nuisance and the city can order them down." The llluminous Lamps are placed unusually high so that the average sidewalk sign is not obstructive. Only the hotel and theatre canopies exten1 tie full width of the sidewalk. If they can be made less broad it Is possible that all will be well. Business men desire that the view from the Four Corners or the Broken

Corners be unbroken and the 'String of lights visible all the way.

sixth for Smaller, had been held aloft on the shoulders of Pete Lyons and

cheered to the echo, our modest heroJoseph W&ssey, was beyond all hope of recall. When everybody else had retired for the night he sat on the front r.orch of his Kast Side abode and played

the "Star Spangled Banner" to the ris

ing sun. Some Russians in the house

next door mistook it for the Cossack

call and being ex-soldiers arose. They

retired latter having administered Jus

This morning Joseph went to work

at the Singer machine office delerlous

with joy. He started out with his de

into trouble. The horse ran away, hit

a telegraph pole and dumped Joseph

out on his head.

When they picked up the enthusiastic

DADDY S CLUB IS STARTED

NEBRASKA PUTS

O. K. ON NEGRO Lincoln, Neb., Nov. 6. The contro

versy with Kansas over the playing of Clinton Itoss, the Nebraska negro guard, in the Nebraska-Kansas game November 15 is closed so far as Ne

braska is concerned. Today a special meeting of the athletic board was held.

at which a resolution was passed per

mitting Ross to play. The action was taken in accordance with an ultimatum by Chancellor Avery last week in which the official refused to permit the color line to be drawn.

A 'Daddy's Club" is being formed in West Hammond. In it are "governor's," pa'a, pa-pa's, pah-pah's, and the "old man," m all stages of servitude. The constitution

and by-laws contains the odium that under no circumstances can a father get the best of a large family. There

fore th society will make no attempt at reformation. F1rt Meeting Other .tight. The other evening the "Daddy's Club" met for the first time to chat, smoke and have a good laugh at the women. They wanted it known that they were "putting one over" on the women. Arthur Deaver, superintendent of schools, was the most gleeful of the gang. Those fellows giggled like girls and were having a great time when all of a sudden their wives came marching in with coffee and a lunch they had prepared in another part of the school building. And so it appears that the West Hammond "Daddy's Club" is only to be an auxiliary of the Mother's Club. They might have known better. No man's wife is gulTible.

Attendance Over 900. Inquiries have been made concerning the relation of the night school to the public school system. The night school is a part of the public school and therefore an institution without tuition. Wilson H. Henderson is in charge of it under the direction of Superintendent C. M. McDaniels. Though the attendance at 'night school is over 900 it is thought that some are kept away, believing that a tuition is charged.

Will Build Residence. Meyers and Cockran will build a S4, 000 residence in 134 Highland street.

FRAIL, WEAKLY CHILD

Made Strong by Vinol. So many cases like this are coming to our attention for the benefit of fathers and mothers of weak, sickly, ailing children in this vicinity we publish the following letter: Mrs. jr. P. Weatherford. Litchfield, 111., says: "We have had an Invalid child

for the past nine years and until we

began using Vinol, we sometimes thought there was little hope for him. He would have terrible coughing spells at night, and they would leave him so

exhausted. We tried everything, but to

no avail. At last some one suggested

that we try Vinol, and we noticed a

change in him from the very first. The coughing- spells ceased and he gained

in strength right along. We would not be without it and would advise parents who have frail and weakly children to try Vinol."

This iai because the child needed the strengthening cod liver elements and the tonic Iron that Vinol contains. No oil, delicious taste. Children love it. We give back your money if Vinol

does not benefit. L Harry Weis, Drug

isfaction to me to know that my efforts for clean government did not fall on altogether deaf ears. The multitude has listened and many were converted. There has been a tremendous awakening. Airing the dark closets and shaking the musty skeletons will have some good results In the future. I am not sorry for anything I said or did knowingly. Although defeated I do not regret that I ran. I am perfectly satisfied to have helped a good cause along on its way to ultimate victory. I have not had time to analyse the vote and suggest reasons. 1 will do this, if possible, in tomorrow's Issue.

(Advertising Story No. 26)

Runture Is a condition from which

we may all hope to escape. Hut once we are so afflicted, we are all forced

to make the best of it. Some cases

can be cured by no other method than

surgery. OTHERS CAN. In a small

percentage of cases, the wearing of a

well-fitting truss, for a time Is all that

is necessary. But it is highly essen

tial that the truss is properly fitted

and does its work well. An ill-fitting

truss is not only a miserable thing to

wear, but deceives the patient and

does him little or no good at a time when a properly fitted one might save

him years of suffering and annoyance.

Added to a well-fitted truss, there

are treatments that may be of material

benefit In saving the patient from a lifetime of truss-wearing or from an operation. So if you are suffering from any kind of a hernia, I will be glad to be at your service at any time you may see fit to call upon me. Remember my facilities and special training for doing all kinds of office work such as treating diseases of women, and diseases of men, stomach, liver, kidney and bladder complaints.
