The members .brought their needle work and spent the afternoon very enjoyably. A prettily appointed two course luncheon was served at four-thirty o'clock. The table was decorated very attractively with white and pink carnations. In two weeks the members of the elut will be gtuests at a party at which Sirs. Nicholas Emmerling will be hostess at her home In Ruth street. Mrs. Emrhefling will entertain at a thimble party.
.1 TIllttnLE PARTV. A very delightful meeting1 of the members of the E. R. T. Club took place yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ralph fierce in Michigan avenue. It was a thimble party and the g-uests spent the hours until four o'clock with their needle work after which they were served with a prettily appointed two course luncheon. Mrs. Tribolet was admitted Into the club as a new member. Mrs. William Meyers was named as the next hostess and she will entertain the members of the club at & thimble party at her home in East State street in two weeks on Tuesday afternoon, November 18th. ETEHTAIXS CLIB FR1EVDS. The young women of the J. V. G. Club were entertained very pleasantly by Miss Jessie. Rohde at her home in East State street last Monday evening. Miss Rohde was hostess at a thimble party and her guests spent a part of the evening with thei rneedle work. Music was also one of the features of the evening. A dainty luncheon was served at ten o'clock. Next Monday evening the club will meet with Miss Johnson at her home, 411 East State

The members of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the First Methodist church were entertained by Mrs. M. M. Tovrle at her home in Ogaen street yesterday afternoon at their regular monthly meeting. It was the annal Thank Offering meeting of tho society. There Were fifty or more ladies in attendance, among them a number from Whiting and East Chicago. Mrs. Rassett of Valparaiso gve a most entertaining and Instructive address on "The Home Supported by the Woman's Homo Missionary Societies in the Vnlted Ststes." She used a large map on which the homes were marked with red stars and gave many incidents concerning the different homes, many
of which she had visited. The ta:k was
greatly enjoyed. Following the talk
by Mrs. Hassett, Mrs. Louts Freeman Have' a vocal solo and Miss Mary Fraley
a reading. The Thank Offerings were then taken. During the social hour the hostesses, Mrs. Towle and Mrs. W.
Mayes Martin served delicious refreshments. A BRIDGE LUNCHEON.

at the Hammond Country Club when
twenty-eight members of the club met for luncheon at one o'clock. Bridge whist was played progressively at several tables during the afternoon and high score was made by Mrs. W. D.

man officer presented his report stating he had examined 113 horses In
different parts of the city and three
were condemned as unfit to live longer.
A case of cruelty to a child was In
vesti gated and the child returned to the proper authorities In Illinois. All members present were very enthusiastic over the outlook for the society

what a Gary election is. More than once they faced police revolvers yesterday and on numerous occasions both were struck by sluggers. Chief Deputy Fred Frledley did service In the 1910 election in Gary and consequently was a veteran. At Sixteenth avenue and Broadway when the police tried to prevent the sheriff from getting away with prisoners Frledley and an officer faced drawn pistols and then twenty deputies and as many officers drew their guns. Bystanders got behind brick build
ings and under automobiles, but there
waa no shooting. Frledley was crack
ed over the head at this time. Later on when he drew a pistol In a mob at Sixteenth avenue and Jefferson street

GOVERNOR PROMISES TROOPS; THEN BALKS Following his clash with the Gary police late yesterday afternoon Chief Deputy Sheriff Fred Frledley called up Governor Ralston on the long distance telephone and secured from him a promise to send troops at once. The appeal was seconded by a Gary business man. At 6 o'clock the governor rang up Mayor Knotts. who stated that there was- no need for the troops. However, the mere rumor that the troops were on the way restored quiet for a while and the sluggers began to Oee from the city in mortal teitor.
