Magnificent Race Put Up by Crumpacker Against the Heaviest Odds Yesterday

With a plurality of 769 voes In the municipal election In Hammond yesterday. Mayor John D. Smalley lacked but 196 votes of getting a majority. Excepting four republican ward aldermen In the first, fourth, eighth and ninth wards respectively, the entire democratic ticket was elected. The republicans and the progressives standing together on a citizens ticket could not have defeated Smalley on the returns of last night- On the head of the ticket the republicans received more than two vots to the progressives one. Simons, the progressive mayoralty candidate wai left behind on his own ticket by eight other candidates who received more votes than he did. , The only progressive candidates who came near to victory were aldermanic nominees, Lewis in the third ward, Williams In the seventh, both of whom beat the republican candidates. In the first ward the vote was close, Moriarty, the democrat having been defeated by Fowler, the republican by only six votes. "There was talk of a contest today by Moriarty friends, and In some quarters charges were made by them that he had been deliberately double crossed. The tenth ward contest simmered down to two votes as a plurality for Morltz. James Boyles, the Independent candidate In the ninth ward received 37 votes in Conkeyville. Sam Abalman ran about as was expected, but his one over a hundred votes will cause considerable money to change hands as many bets had been made that h would not get more than a hundred votes.
