KELSON ONLY DANE TO HOLD TITLE, " HIS COUNTRYMEN NOT MAKING A GOOD SHOWING IN HISTORY OF RING.
Oscar Matthew Battling Nelson undoubtedly the greatest Danish fljrhter that ever crawled through the ropes to So battle. What Nelaon has dono In pugilism has be-on much: in fact. so much that the "Purablo Dane." as he ia familiarly termed by the prlove fraternity, realized the fact and wrote a book of his career in his idle moments out of the ring:. Put without disparaging; Nelson's ability as An author, it can truthfully be Raid that he was far And away a greater flgrhter. iris wonderful rlnjr record, showlnjc battles extending: over a period of seventeen years, is indisputable evidence of his Class. Start fc'larhtlnK Karly. Nelson was born in Copenhag-en on ; June 6. IS82, and was a little less than IS years old when he was in the budding stape of pugilism. But that stage didn't last any time, for Bat soon blos
somed out as a fighter, with the championship bee buzzing in hia little bonnet. But it is doubtful If the Dane knew at that time what was coming to him before he might realize his ambition. His path was not strewn with roses. Ther were bumps a plenty for him to pas" over. It was love of fishtinjc that really made Nelson a great rind man. He often says that he would rather fight than do anything else he knows of, and when the ups and downs of his career are considered, there isn't a chance, in the world to dispute his argument. For twelve long years the Dane plodded along before he reached the championship goal. After all his struggles to win the title Nelson only managed to hold it for less than two years. Ad VTolgast "arrived" then, and In a fight which went forty rounds the durable-
Jness of the Dane sagged In the middle
and Wolgast became champion. Even
that defeat has not stopped Nelson. He
has been fighting- ever since, -but it has been the same old story of the "slip" that Is inevitable. The Dane no longer fights as a champion, the majority of his contests showing him worsted by men who are hardly known in the game. lm Maay Different Clamed. "Cyclone Johnny" Thompson, the Sycamore, 111.. farmer, conies from Danish parentage, although he was born in Ogle county, Illinois. Thompson's ring career, which he claims Is still unfinished, began in 1902, and today he is 57 years old. It would be hard to find a more Interesting or unique struggle for honors than that put up by Thompson. The record book shows that he has fought In more classes than any other fighter. As a lightweight he made a promising start. Inter he fought as a welter, then as a middleweight and now he is willing to take on the heavies. As a "middleweight the "Cyclone" scored his groat victory when he beat
