If anything was needed to indicate the confiding, childlike and even bashful nature of the ordinary man it was shown in the $150,000 breach of promise suit brought by Miss Mclntyre against William Hughes, an elderly Brooklynite. The first time he met her, he said. Miss Mclntyre had thrown her arms around his neck and whispered, "William, kiss me." tlI refused," said the aged defendant. Whether the defendant's refusal was connected in any way with his health is not known, but he testified that while be was engaged to Miss Mclntyre he had been afflicted with kidney trouble, rheumatism, lumbago pain In the head and nervous dis orders. It is gratifying to reflect that if man with all these ailments is worth $150,000 many of us are priceless. But the trusting nature of the man was shown by the letters he wrote True, he says he was only "jollyin her along," but, in view of the tabas co brand of literature he mailed, th plea doesn't "listen good." Why will men be so trusting an write such stuff? What is speech for? Why the tele phone? Isn't the wireless here Safest way of all is to make signs. Defendant appears to be up against it. Only way out would be to try th suit before a Jury of eugenlsts, who would probably hurl him out of cour on account of his "kidney trouble, rheumatism, lumbago, pains in th head and nervous disorders." Roosevelt seems to be getting along beautifully down in South America but we certainly do miss certain pungent appellations which, he in his speeches is only too prone to call people who disagree with him. We haven't noticed, for instance that the colonel has called anyone a liar down in the land whence tho tango came. They don't like the word however and are said to be quite hasty. If he is still suffering from sup pressed oratory it may be necessary for Mr. Bryan's health that he find a vent in New Jersey, but what has the Governorship of that State to do with the abandonment of the Philippine Islands? That may still be paramount among so many other paramountcies yet aching in his charged bosom, but what is it to Jersey or Jersey to It? If It be Bald that It is the duty of! New Jersey Democrats to support the Administration, are they likely to be led to that duty by the babblings of Silver Dollar Bill about and against banks and bankers? He appears to be as rational in his talk as he was when ranting about the Money Power and the Curse of Gold In 1896. And how is Dollar Bill helping, if he seeks to help, Mr. Wilson by mak ing the sage statement that Candi date Bryan "would have been elected President years ago but for the power of certain persons to terrorize the people and in producing and bringing about a panic?" If Mr. Bryan is more useful to the Administration out of Washington than on the Job, It must be when he is abolishing his poverty in the tents of Chautauqua. New York Sun. Things are getting to a low ebb when an editor has to send his money to some other town in order to keep it In a bank. Not because there is not a bank in Meigs, neither is it because its officers are not courteous and capable, neither is it because we are afraid that our 15 cents would not be just as safe in our home bank as in any other bank. But the reason is that the bank sends out of town for its printing, has plenty of money and does not care to advertise in this paper for business. And under these circumstances we feel that we are Justifiable In doing our banking in some other Thomas county town, From the Meigs Weekly News. NOTICED HIS. CHICAGO now has three courts for the consideration of domestic difficulties. But the marriage license clerk keeps busy just the same. A VERY BAD SHOWING. When Dr. Frledmann came to this country announcing a cure for tuberculosis by means of his turtle serum, the afflicted flocked to him in great numbers, credulous in their belief that he would be able to do them good. He had for a while unrestrain ed access to a number of hospitals in New York and also in Rhode Island He treated hundreds of patients, and although benefit was announced In a few cases, that benefit does not seem to have been permanent. An edi torial note in the Springfield, Mass. Republican gives the upshot of the Friedmann treatment as follows: Dr. Friedmann and his tuberculosis cure are almost forgotten. Yet It Is worth noting that not one of the 120 pulmonary cases treated by him at the Rhode Island states sanitarium has shown improvement, while 17 per cent have shown an increased activity of the disease. From this it would appear that the Friedmann "cure" was even worse than no cure at all. Not one of the 120 cases treated was helped. Seventeen per cent show an increased activity in the disease. Of course, it Is not certain that this increased activity is a result of the injection of the Friedmann serum, but it is certain that the Friedmann serum did not prevent that increase of activity. A more lamentable failure than his has not been recorded among manuse magnetic passes, hypnotic suggestions, laying on of hands, or promote mental suggestion, can each and all show better results than Friedmann did in his world-touted turtle serum. It would seem that there ought to be something done to a man like this by way of punishment, so that any successor who might feel himself Inclin ed to follow the Friedmann footsteps would be warned from doing so by reason of the punishment that would be inflicted upon him when he failed to make good. Benton Harbor Leader. THE wisdom of refusing to recognize the president pro tem of Mexico has now been fully confirmed by the gentleman himself. LIABILITY OR COMPENSATION? Attention is directed to the proceedings of the Lake County Bar association meeting which are pritned elsewhere in this issue. The lawyers discussed whether the present methods the Injured employe has of obtaining damages should be supplanted by a compensation law. It was suggested that a scheme of state insurance with a tax on em ployers would provide funds to care for those made dependents by industrial accidents. Certainly the subject Is an important one. Because this region is one of the great industrial centers of the world and a place where much lia bility litigation is undertaken the proceedings of the bar meeting are of much interest.
