That hog- cholera is on the Increase In Indiana is shown by statistics Just made public by Thomas W. Brolley, state statistician. These figrures show the ravages of the disease during a period of ten years. While the statistician's fisrures refer to the animals merely as dying- from diseases, attaches of Mr. Brolley's office say that

cholera is by far the predominant fac-j tor In the hog- deaths throughout the state. For the year 1912 the total num- I ber of hogs that died in the state from . diseases jumped alarmingly over 1911.! The 1912 figures were 562.542 deaths, and the total values of the animals. If, they had lived, were estimated at $3,- . 685.303. The total deaths in 1911! reached 476,814. From 1900 to 1910.' inclusive, the number of deaths has shown almost an uninterrupted in- I crease. The years of 1904 and 1911

stand out as the ones in which the heaviest toll was reaped. In 1904 a total of 349.610 deaths was reported. In only one year of the ten has the disease shown a tendency to decrease. That was In 1902. when the total leached 197,491. In 1911 Rush, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Gibson. Madison, Knox, Clinton. Wayne, Boone and Hamilton counties had the highest number of deaths among hogs. In 1912 some of the same counties were in the f.rst ten. Montgomery, Knox. Clinton, Boone. Henry, Johnson, Hendrickes,

Rush, Carroll and Jay. Montgomery

county had the largent total of deaths.

28.530. Ioeat I,om Heavy. In Lake county a loss of 690 hogs valued at $4,231 is reported. Laporte county lost 2,053 hogs worth $16,233, Newton county 1.524 hogs valued at $9,892 while 1 nPorter county a loss of $10,648 was sustained when the cholera carried on 1.512 porkers.

STEEL MILLS LAY OFF MANY MORE EMPLOYES

There is a slowing down of operations at the Gary works of the Illinois Steel company. Although officials of the company said several days ago that no men were being laid off yet a big batch were given furloughs yesterday. Some days as many as 100 are said to have been laid off. Order are coming In slower to the rail mill and the open hearth department. In the billet mill, however, there are said to be orders ahead for a good many months. At the American Sheet and Tin Plate company the average operating schedule is foir days a week. Some

time ago a number of draftsmen were let out at the Ambridge plant. The Baldwin Locomotive company has given orders for the . fabricating of the steel for its East Chicago plant and this will mean much business. It is said that there Is a slackening at both the Joliet and South Chicago works of the Illinois Steel company. In some quarters the new tariff law is blamed. As the Gary mills are the most modern in the time of slow orders they operate better than at greater capacity than other plants.
