3 CARD HOLDS IMPORTANT MEETING Messrs. Kohde, Swanton and Schroet-

r, composing the board of public works, met this mornlns In regular session with little to consider. The contract and bond of Newell brothers for the Webster avenue walks was acceted. The Improvement Is vital to Webster avenue, which, though practically a downtown street, has been rudely neglected. Recently the board of works became cognizant of the fact that the contributory avenues branching oft of Fayette street from Oakley avenue to Haywood Park comprise a fair-sized town and need strict attention. The southeast corner of Fayetfe street and Oakley avenue has until this fall been -an eyesore by reason of a projecting curb, a hindrance to traffic. This the board has had removed. As ordered by the city council. Attorney Gavit has notified the Erie railroad to plank Its Highland street crossing. Objection to its present condition was made by Alderman Bast-wood.

now he has neither enough for use or ornamentation. It is a most unfortunate thing, but it cannot disparage I'lagernan, who is campaigning as hard as ever. H has adopted a southern colonel's hat, which goes better with missing teeth than a derby.

Just now the head barber-alderman Is inquiring into the workings of the two-week pay law. This act, passed by the recent legislature, requires that ; corporations pay their employes twice i a month. On behalf of the city firemen and police riageman desires that ; this rule apply to the city, which is ' not a corporation. j According to City Attorney Gavit the , city and town law stipulates that "city j employes shall be paid once a month." ' Oscar takes this to mean "at least once a month." Jt will be threshed out i at the next meeting of the city couni ctl.

ly lighted. It is easily available to State and Sibley streets, two thoroughfares that are alive with -people till late Sn the evening.

Oscar Still Busy. Oscar riageman, the militant councilman, is notable at present to smile in child-like glee. There is a reason. With the poisoning of his gums Oscar's teeth fell out one by one until

Finished This Month. The John Gartner theater building on Oakley avenue is being roofed now

and there is every indication that it

will be completed this month. The block is of brick and stone.

firmly founded on concrete. Some sort of a cozy theater Is to be housed on the first floor with rooms above. It is

J said that the whole corner Sibley

street and Oakley avenue will be eventually turned into a hotel. That has not been definitely decided, but Indications are favorable. . The Gartner theater Is to be made

very attractive and will be handsome-

Reporter Taken Sick.

Tom K. Bigler, reporter for the Ham

THE PROGRESSIVES HAVE ROUTED THE BARNACLES. REACTION IS BEING REPLACED BY ACTION. THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THIS CITY THE GREAT PULSATING CENTER OF THE CALUMET REGION IS BEING GRASPED. FIFTY THOUSAND PEOPLE LIVE WITHIN THE FIVE CENT FARE LIMIT OF HAMMOND. THOUSANDS MORE ARE LOCATING WITHIN ITS LIMITS. ITS THEATRES, ITS DEPARTMENT STORES, ITS COUNTRY CLUB, ITS SUPERIOR SOCIAL ADVANTAGES, ITS HONEST ADMINISTRATION OF CITY AFFAIRS, ITS PARKS, SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES ATTRACT THE BETTER CLASS OF THE WORKERS IN THE INDUSTRIES OF THE REGION.

TREMENDOUS

DEVELOPEM

The Potential Developement of Hammond, that which is Already Assured by its Industrial Expansion, Will Double Its Population in the Next Five Years If you could put your finger on that section of Hammond which will attract the great bulk of this population yet to come, that section which will be the home of greater Hammond, your investments in real estate would increase tremendously in value THE HAMMOND REALTY COMPANY'S ADDITIONS TO MAYWOOD ARE LOCATED IN THIS SECTION. TO THE WEST OF THEM IS CALUMET AVENUE, WHICH BEGINS AT LAKE MICHIGAN IN NORTH HAMMOND, PASSES THROUGH THE LAKES AND RIVERS REGION, THE MANUFACTURING DISTRICT, THE POPULOUS EAST SIDE AND THEN EXTENDS FOR MILES INTO THE TRUCK FARMING DISTRICTS TO THE SOUTHWARD. TO THE EAST OF THEM IS COLUMBIA AVENUE WHERE ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL GATES OF THE GOGEBIC IRON COMPANY IS TO BE LOCATED A STREET WHICH IS ALREADY THE BUSINESS STREET OF EAST HAMMOND.
