Yesterday's horse market was one, of the best held at the Hub In months and a number of good sales were made. The city presented a lively appearance all day, the principal arteries of trad being filled with horse buyers, venders and hawkers of various wares. Yesterday's market reminded . one of the bygone days when the horse reigned supreme and without the automobile competition. At least forty animals were sold and shipped over the road to their destination last evening. Program: Remarks by the President. East Chicago. Belated reports of the damage caused by Monday evening's storm are to the effect that the county seat got off lucky, considerable damage belqg done on farms east of the city. Near Leroy a large barn belonging to George Young was burned to the ground, lightning striking It. Charles Oehmich, living near Wlnfleld, lost four cows by being struck by lightning. J. Briest, living on the Joliet road, also lost a valuable cow. The damage was worse near Leroy and over Into Porter county, the storm being much worse than experienced here. X. V. Call, the mall carrier, has purchased a new auto bus capable of carrying about fifteen passengers, to be used In doing a general bus business in the citv. The new transfer bus will be broken In during fair week. Mr. Call intends to operate It permanently In this city. Miss Lois M. Fowler, who had charge of the English and history in our high school last year, has recently had a deserved promotion to the head of the English department of the Princeton, Ind., high school. Princeton is JuBt completing a new $75,000 high Bchool building and Mlas Fowler's Crown Point friends are pleased to hear of her good fortune and congratulate the school board of Princeton. In a recent deal It Is reported that Louis Melcher has sold his Ridga street property to John Gels and purchased the Mrs. Dan Strong home on East North street. Joseph Ames and daughter, of New London. Ohio, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ames on Grant street. Mr. Ames is 90 years of age and still in good ehalth considering his years. Mrs. Floyd Irish of Hammond was a Crown Point visitor yesterday. Postmaster Call of Gary transacted business in Crown Point yesterday. The city's exchequer is being replenished this week with vehicle and venders' license fees, the city clerk issuing no small amount of licenses this year. Miss Clara Letherer of Valparaiso university Is visiting her relatives here this week. Marshal Tom Piatt had a desperate struggle with a prisoner he was try ing to arrest last evening, the fellow, gtviog his name as John Dae, being wanted by the fair grounds authorities for trying to do crooked business on the fair grounds proper. He was chased to town and was about to make a getaway on the Gary & Southern traction Hoe when he was nabbed by Piatt and placed under arrest on two or three charges. His hearing will probably occur this afternoon. A meeting and reunion of the 73rd Indiana G. A. R. members will be held tn Crown Point on the second or third of September. A good program is be lng arranged for the occasion at pres ent. Mrs. Herbert Wheaton and son are visiting friends and relatives In Ham mond for a few days. Quite a number from here attended the Elks' carnival at Gary last evening. Julius Grlesel and Dr. Charles J Tlnkham were Gary visitors last even ing. Crown Point was visited by a se vere electric and thunderstorm Mon day evening, followed by a big fall of rain. No damage was done excepting to the telephone system by the light nlng. The rainfall was needed and will do a great deal of good to pastures and maturing corn. Some dam age was done at the fair grounds to the many tents and refreshment stands by the steady downpour of rain. Miss Agnes McBride of Chicago Is spending two weeks' vacation with Miss Louise Crawford. Mr. and Mrs. Will Ellwanger of Chicago are visiting with Mr. and Mrs Floyd E. Farley on East street. Mrs. John Griggs is reported as still being very sick at her home on South Main street. Word has been received from Mrs Paul E. Raach and daughter. Miss Bessie, who are on a vacation trip through the west, stating that they are now at Seattle, Wash., and having an enjoyable time. Misses Harriet and Elsie Burkhardt of Chicago are visiting with Miss Mayme Laws on East street. George Bielefeld of Indiana Harbor is spending this week with relatives in Crown Point. Miss Nellie Griesel has returned from a delightful vaqatlon trip to Yel lowstone National park. Mrs. John Elnsweiler will be rought home from the West Side hos pital in Chicago on Thursday very much Improved in health. Several cases of mumps andone of carlet fever in a mild form are re ported by the local physicians, the mumps being almost epidemic among the younger children. Electric lights have been installed on South Court street near the fair grounds this week, which will be a great convenience to the traveling public in that vicinity during the fair. BURNHAM. Miss Naomi Anderson of Park avenue entertained friends from Hammond Sunday. Miss Mary Hayes of Center avenue spent Sunday evening in Hammond. Mr. and Mrs. W. Wall and children of Robertsrdale spent Sunday here as he guests of Mrs. Wall's parents Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Klersey. Mrs. Fred Fuller of Roselawn, Ind., visited Burnham friends Sunday. Herbert Wilson of Pullman avenue accompanied the B. A. C. boys to Claypool. Ind.. Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burnham re turned o their home in Englewood Sunday after a short visit with relatives here. The Misses Estella Mills and Trent, Hill spent Sunday afternoon a Lake Front park. Work is now progressing rapidly on the streets. The grading is being done and slag spread. Word has been received from Mrs. Sarah Wilder that she has been quite sick since leaving here for a visit with relatives at Sandwich 111., but she Is now feeling fine. C. G. W. car No. 20714 caught fire In the E. J. & E. yards here Monday morning from unknown reasons. A hurry-up call was sent for an engine nd an Erie engine raced here from Hammond and pulled the blazing car out to Center avenue. The Hegewlsch fire department responded and succeed ed in quenching the blase after a stiff fight, when the car was taken back to the yards, removing the blockade from the street crossing. The B. A. C. boys played baseball at Claypool. Ind., Sunday and came home reporting a great game. The line-up was as follows: Carlton Smith, Arnold Faverty, c Robert Frank, Theo. George Beamer, city fireman has sub-mitted his resignation to take effect on September 1st.
