International Harvester corporation. Arnold B. Keller, cashier and acting president of the Gary State bank has resigned his position after 5 years of service to accept a high position in Chicago financial circles. Mr. Keller next month will become one of the exe cutives of the treasury department. In ternational Harvester compauy. - Takes Kxeentlve I'o. In his new position Mr. Keller will take over broad powers and will b one of the three chief executives of the Harvester treasury department. His Work later on will entail much travel ing in this country, in Europe, and In South' America? J MY." Keller came to Gary" not quite six years ago from the cashlershin of the bank at Eureka,' III. He assumed his duties as cashier of the Gary State bank, which is Gary's leading financial Institution and which has on its direc torate the general officials of the steel company. During his career In the banking business in Gary Mr. Keller with Presl dent tt. u. Hay, jr, has stood for a conservative banking policy and for the extension of Gary home building loans. ' He has fought for clean methods and particularly against some of the pawnbroking methods, and usurious int;rest rates that one or two bankers have tried to force on the city. ' President of Gary Y. M. V. A. Mr. Keller, who Is a graduate of Eureka college, is happily married and resides with his wife, and daughter at 708 Harrison street. He is identified with' the Christian church of Gary, the Orpheus Musical club, the University club and is president of the Gary Y. M. C A. ' "tie intends to keep his residence In Gary for the next eighteen months but he will give up the presidency of the Y. M. C. A. Refuses Government Post. Several months ago Mr. Keller's brother, R. C. Keller, vice president of the Colonial Trust and Savings bank of Chicago was Offered the comptrollership of the currency while the Gary brother was offered the deputy romptrollership. This Is an illustration of how well' the Chicago bankers regard the Keller brothers for they heartily indorsed them to President Wilson. The government post, however, was refused-. Typical Oiiry Young Mn. There Is much regret that Mr. Keller is to quit Gary, banking circles and the presidency of the Y. M. C. A. But 32 year old he has -been regarded as the typical Gary young man, who hn.s made a success in his life work. He Was elected president of the Gary Clearing House asociation when he was 28 years old. One of the prettiest entertainments held this sumer was that given Satur day afternoon to announce the engagement of two of the most popular young people of East Chicago, Miss Harriet Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Phillips of Beacon street, to Dr, Raleigh P. Hale. The Invitations had summoned the guests to a four o'clock tea and were issued in the name of Mrs. Philips and Miss Harriet. There was a general impression among the guests that a betrothal was to be announced, as the fact of the engagement of Miss Phillips and Dr. Hale, has been tacitly understood among the friends of the young people, for some time, albeit there has been no formal anouncement made. An air of 'expectancy therefore prevaded the atmosphere, but it was not until the refreshments were served, that th

expected announcement camo. Then It arrived in the form of dainty cards tied
to the most fragrant of pink roses,; one of which adorned each plat on which, heart shaped sandwiches had been placed, together with an iced beverage. Of course this led to a great many expressions of good will and best wishes.on the part of the guests. The cards anounced the date of the wedding as September 9. The bride to be, who is one of the beauties of East Chicago, tall and willowy, brown-eyed and with a crown of bronze hair, looked very lovely in a sheer gold colored gown. The dining room had been prettily decorated In pink, with a banket of pink roses forming the center piece and pink gauso ribbons drawn from the dome to the corners of the table over which the dome was Suspended and tied in bow-knots. In spite of the heat of the day the rooms were kept cool by means of electric fans which kept the air In circulation? There were forty guests present. Dr. Hale, the fortunate man. Is one of too distinctly eligible bachelors of East Chicago. Although young In years, he is a man of ripe experience in his profession, having had Dr. A. G. Schlleker as his preceptor during the early years of his practice, and gain ing thereby experience that has helped materially in qualifying him for his rapidly growing practice. He has always been a leader in the social life of East Chicago and has held appointments of a public nature such as the presidency of the city board of health etc Miss Phillips Is a graduate of the East Chicago high school and hat a great many friends in East Chicago who wish her well. No candidates for the aldermanic chairs have so far announced themselves. Joe Russell is planning to build a ney residence on Lafayette street. He expects to begin excavation at once. 'The Indiana Harbor fire department battled against a, stubborn blase last Saturday on Cedar street, and but for the splendid work by the department a big property loss would have resulted. Owing to the big start the fire had before the department was summoned a property damage of nearly $4,000 was caused. Two gasoline explosions took place during the fire but nobody waa injured. The fire started in the basement of Wolfe Marcovich, 3716 Cedar street, having been caused by a defective illuminating plant. The building was damaged to the extent of $1,800 and the contents $1,000. An auto the property of M. Armaofi In the rear of 3714 was damaged to the extent of $300, the. blaze having been so hot that it was Impossible to take the machine away. The flames spread to a cement block house causing $400 worth of damage there and In th rear of this building a hundred dollar property loss was caused on a barn. A store next door to the Marcovich place was alsd caught by the blaze and the contents in the store room damaged, the loss there having been about $500.- A nominal loss was caused on a building at 3720 Cedar street owned by the Indiana Har bor Lumber company. All the property wjth the exception of the auto was Insured.' With the fire spreading so rapidly In every direction the department had Its hands full and 'did remarkable work in checking the fire.
