A GAINST STUDENT Valpo Normal Man Accused of Attack on a Little Girl. Valparaiso, Ind., Aug. 6. F. R. House, a law student, whose home is in Pennsylvania, was arrested last evening by Sheriff Lindall on a serious charge, and placed in the county Jail. House, who rooms at Joseph Talcott's residence on Lincoln avenue, la alleged to have entlc'jd a little 12-year-old girl, who resides , in that neighborhood, to his room and there to have made an attempt to criminally assault her. Valparaiso, Ind., Aug. 6. Word comes from Morgan township this afternoon of a horrible accident which occurred there this morning, a 4-year-old girl being burned so badly that she died an hour afterward. The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wal ters was the victim. The child was alone In an upstairs room of the home at the time and playing with matches, which Ignited and set fire to her clothing. Her screams attracted attention. but aid did not reach her until she was frightfully burned. A doctor was summoned from this city and hurried to th scene in his automobile. All his efforts were un availing, however, the little ones sufferings being ended by death, a short time after his arrival. The ac cident happened about 11 o'clock. The Walters live a mile south of Maiden on a farm. The house did not catch on fire. THE STEEL MARKET. It is estimated that steel orders at rpesent are running at approximately 60 per cent of shipments. Had It not been for the less favorable crop out look recently, a representative of one of the large steel concerns says, buy ing orders would have been much larg er. There has been a slight improve ment in the demand for wire, but no heavy buying is expected until consumeni have a more definite Idea re gardtng crocs. During the past month the railroads bought 100,000 tons of rails, 2,850 cars and 80 locomotives. It is expected that August will reflect sharp improvement due to 1914 buying. At least 300,000 tons of rails are being Inquired for covering next year, Inquiries for about 15,000 cars are also In the market. About 100,000 tons of fabricated steel was purchased last mouth. Pig Iron saies ioFXuTy"wer trie "Best of any month of the year. In all 550 000 tons were bought. There was a very apparent improvement in the last two weeks of. the month which offset the dullness of the first half. Iron prices are now from 25 to 50 cents a ton high er than ten days ago. Iron and steel merchants of Glasgow, write un der date, of Jul. 15 as follows: "We have to report a very steady market since we last wrote, the closing pries today of 55s J4d cash buyers showing an advance of 4d over the figure rul ing for this position a week ago, but the business put through has been small. "Shipments from Mlddlesborough for the first twenty-four days of the month amount to 63,344 tons, as compared with 80,127 tons for the corresponding period last year. The store in Middlesborough continues to be heavily drawn upon and shows a decrease of 7,308 tons on the week, while the Cumber land stores have also decreased to the extent of 470 tons for the same period.
