Elder Berry sez thet in England they're a-chantin' t' give their women more light, but In Amerlky they're a prayin' thet she won't get enny more. Not everybuddy's a musician, but most all o' us kin play th" fool now an' anon. The city council met last evening- for their regular monthly session with the mayor and Councilmen Allman, Bielefeld, Mack and Vincent being present. No new business was taken up at last night's meeting on account of the absence of two of the council members. The city attorney was instructed to draft an ordinance in conformity with the report of the street and alley committee in the matter of the. naming of streets and numbering of houses in the city, the same to be submitted to the council at some meeting in the near future for their approval and passage. Action on the Bezor ditch improvement, the West street opening proposition was deferred, as was the question of the extension of water mains. The proposition of the Letz factory owners to Install water mains to their plant to be used for fire protection purposes and for drinking water, they to stand the expense of the main extension in return for two or three years' free use of city water, was referred to the water committee. South Side property owpers were present with a plan of shortening: -the course of the Bezor ditch south of South street, by diverting the course of the water way on South Main street through largo enough tile to carry the same. The matter was referred to the street and alley committee. Bills amounting to nearly $2,500 were allowed at last evening's session. An appropriation ordinance appropriating money for the expenses of library, extra police, street and light funds for the balance of the fiscal year was passed. The council adjourned at an
early hour. Much complaint has been heard anent the practice of property owners and city water consumers in allowing the water to run " out of sprinkling hose without a nozzle affixed thereto. The practice is one that is becoming of an alarming- proportion and in the present hot. dry weather Is a menace to the community, especially so in case of fire where the water pressure would soon be depleted with the large number of sprinkling hose connections attached without any nozzle restraint. The city officials have taken the matter up and threaten to fine and shut off the water of all consumers found guilty of the practice. The town officials at one time passed an ordinance regulating the us of water and the present city council intends to enforce Its provisions to the letter in order to safeguard the entire public In case of fire. It is reported that the Adank milk route has taken over the Monix milk business, a deal h:ylng recently been made between the two dairymen for the control of the business In this city. The report could not be verified last evening. An effort will be made by interested citizens in Crown Point, in combination with the city council, to Illuminate the dome of the courthouse, more especially the clock dials. When the plans for the new additions to the county building were submitted the specifications called for the electric lighting of the clock dials and dome. This, however, was never done and those behind the present agitation will either endeavor to have the old specifications carried out or a new lighting system Installed.
