Peoples Temperance Union will meet Monday evening- August 4 at the home of Miss Elsie Hudson, 744 Claude street. A cordial invitation is extended to any young persons, interested in temperance work. SUNDAY SERVICES. The Rev. Walter Elliott of Peoria, 111., who is the guest of his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. F. M. Elliott of Ogden street will occupy the pulpit of the First Presbyterian church Sunday morning. During the Rev. Hoffman's stay in the east the services at the First Presbyterian church are being conducted by the Rev. Graham Fuller. GRANTED A LICENSE. Miss Rae Wheeler and Chas. Benson both of Hammond were granted a marriage license In Chicago yesterday afternoon. HOLD REGULAR MEETING. Quite an important meeting of the L. T. L. was held yesterday afternoon at three o'clock in the parlors of the First Christian church in Calumet ava. Arrangements were completed for the Silver Medal Contest to be held the latter part of August and eight contestants were named, four girls and four boys. Other business of Interest was tranacted following which there was a most enjoyable social hour. Re freshments were served during the social hour. The meeting of the society are held regularly every two weeks, the next meeting to take place on the afternoon of Aug. 18. HAVE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS. Mrs. James Graves and Mrs.' Joseph Hanes of Erie street are entertaining their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swartz of Wllliamsport, Ind., and their brother, S. W. Swarta and his wife of Fort Wayne, Ind., this week. Mr. rn.no Mrs. S. W. Swartz made the trip in their machine. Miss Genlee Bush of Wllliamsport is also a guest at the home of Mrs. Graves. Shs will remain in Hammond for quite an extended visLEAVE ON EASTERN TRIP. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Cross of Indiana avenue will leave today on an extended eastern trip. They will visit at Niagara Falls, Buffao, Washington, D. C. Philadelphia and New York City. During their absence from Hammond their son, Richard Cross, will be the guest of relatives in Chicago. RETURN FROM VACATION. The Misses Lydia Syrene and Olive Bates will return today from their va- - cations spent In the east. They visited at Niagara Falls. Buffalo, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Cape Cod. At Cape Cod they were entertained by Miss Syrene's parents who have their summer home there. They will spend a few weeks at Mackinac Island and other points in Michigan. ANNUAL PICNIC. The annual picnic of the Baptist Sunday school Is being held today at Douglas park. A number left for the park on the ten o'clock car and will spend the entire day there. Dinner will be served at noon and games and various contests will be the feature of the day. RETURN FROM CANADA. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. MacAleer and family of Webb street returned home last evening from a most delightful automobile trip through Michigan. They visited at a number of points in Mich igan and at Saul Ste Marie they were entertained by their relatives. Mr. and Mrs. E. La. Khortridge of Crown Point. WOIfl ACCEPT OFFER OF GARY METHODISTS Missionary Society To Build Settlement House to Cost $6,000. Battle Ground, Ind., Aug. 2. The second day's session of the Woman's Home Missionary Society was held In the Epworth League Chapel. The executive committee, reporting on the Gary Settlement House, recommended that the conference accept the gift of th Methodist Church of Gary and begin the erection of the new settlement house to cost not to exceed $6,000. This was decided favorably and pledges for $525 were made In a few minutes. Mrs. J. A. Secor of Laporte was reelected president, Mrs. W. Rev. C. J. Sharp Praises Work of River Town's Congregation. The Rev. C. J. Sharp of the Hammond Christian church returned from Two weeks ago the congregation had ten members. During the fortnight the Rev. Sharp added 101 new mem'bers. 97 of these beintr adults. The yariou, departments are In working order. A Sunday school has for its superintendent, J. C. The young man was graduated from the Gary high school In 1911 and later attendea Michigan university.
