REVIVING THE DROWNED.
Forty-five drownings have occurred
in this region since June first this year. Gallant attempts have been
made to save . some of the victims I
by the pulmotor but have not In
some cases the rescuers given up too
easily? A contemporary says: There- have recently been given two striking and convincing illustrations of the fact that. resuscitation of the apparently drowned is a matter of patience and perHevernnee. The New York life-saving
service reports the cast of a man who was resuscitated after he had
been under water 23 minutes. The
work of resuscitation took over a day. A like report comes from At
lantic City of a man who was revived after he had been in the water 10 minutes and had been
worked with an hour. These instances furnish a val
uable lesson for this season whan
the swimming resorts are thronged
and drownings are so common. They teach that no one should be given up as drowned until he has been worked over at lesst 24
hours. .
Unquestionably many men and women and especially many children have been given up as dead
when proper methods, sufficiently
protracted, would have saved them.
The common method of mechanical respiratory movement is well
enough known, but it haa not been generally known that it is worth while to keep It up mora th&n a few minutes, or, at the most, an hour or so. Now we know that life may depend upon long perseverance.
