As a rule the life of the newspaper artist Is one of peace and tranquility. Mild, easygoing people they are, who like their work and seldom curse at the office boy. True, a split pen or a pencil missing sometimes wrings from them a mild oath, but aside from this it Is seldom that they wax choleric or f.etcherize their finger nails. However, there is one unfailing method of rousing the ire of the most diffident of the cartoon trade; one way of stirring their system with rage. Tut the man in the street, the layman, behind the cartoonist at his board and you have the scenario for a comedy skit that would make George Ade's choicest offering seem sad and dismal In comparison. The ignorance of the average person In regard to the workings of the1 comic art business could not very well be exaggerated.

"Do you black them up yourself or does your assistant do the Ink work for you?" "You cartoonists now, I suppose you fellows always look on the funny side of things." But when the inoffensive, well-meaning onlooker reaches the part about the "littile nephew" it is then that self-restraint ceases to be a virtue. Earnings of the Republic Iron and
Steel company In the first half of this year were unusually large for that corporation. The total income of 12,808,000 was considerably more than
double the amount In the correspondingperiod last year, and the amount
available for dividends $1,972,000compares with a little lea than $500, 000 available in the first haf of 1912.
After deductions for the preferred
dividend the surplus was 11,097,000, or at the rate of a little more than 8 per
cent on the common stock for the full
year.
Both the common and preferred
sstock of Republic Iron were helped yesterday by the report. The common
stock jumped up to 24 and the pre
ferred to 86 3-4. The common was
down around 12 about a month ago.
The last sale of the preferred previous to yesterday was at 79, and the stock had been considerably lower.

feet apart. There will also be an 18inch wall of concrete . extending all around the buiding. This wall and the piers will go down to a depth of

ter while the concrete is being put in
place.
The concrete will be mixed at one point and carried to the places where it is to be used on small dump cars
drawn by small engines on a narrow-
gauge track. The cement will be shipped In. bulk
to the scene of operations, instead of in sacks, thereby simplifying its handling, and doing away with all hand j
work in ts loadng and unloading. This is the first time, according to the engineers, for the cement to be handled in bulk. The process of mixing the concrete will be greatly simplified by the scheme to be employed. There will be two high bins, one on each side of the mixer, one to contain cement and the other crushed stone. The cement will first be dumped automatically into a well and carried thence by means of an endless chain bucket system Into the bin. This will be provided with a shoot through wheh a steady stream of cement will issue into the' mixer. Thence the finished concrete will be automatically loa-dei Into dump cars and conveyed to the work. Tweve thousand barrels of cement will be used In the foundation of this mammoth building, alone. - Four tracks are to be laid through the building for the locomotives !n
