MISSION BARREN OF RESULTS rCoBttna4 Tram Pare L north end of the county who went to Indianapolis Tuesday evening to confer with state officials to see if 'here was not some way the act could be modified so as to gtvtj a more liberal Interpretation. Committee Is Rack The committee composed of City Attorney Harvey J. Curtis of Gary, Harry Warriner and C. E. Kendricks, architects, Gary; John Gavit, city attorney, and Architect Hutton of Hammond, and Attorney Abe Ottenheimer of East Chicago. The committee returned this morning delighted with the courtesies received at the hands of the state officials, but discouraged at the result. "We discussed the new housing law from every angle with Secretary of the State Board of Health Hurty and Attorney-General Honan," said one mem ber of the committee, "but there Is no way by which the law can be modified until the next meeting of the state leglegislature, which is practically two years hence. A special session of the legislature might be called, but that is Improbable. Both Dr. Hurty and At torney-General Honan fully sympa thised with the committee and said they knew the hardship the new law would work on Lake county cities, where the majority of the building lots are 25 and 30 lots. The great building boom which Lake county cities has enjoyed the past five years has received a death blow. Real estate men have already noticed it, especially In Gary and Hammond. Sales have dropped off. Loans cannot be secured on any kind of a flat building or store building with flats above. The fate of the two-flat building, once so popular In Hammond and Gary, has been sealed. On 25 and 30-foot lots a two-flat building- must have a four-foot yard and space on each side of the building. This Is impossible, for on a 25-foot lot the width of the flat build ing would only be 17 feet; likewise the 20-foot lot would mean a 22-foot fiat building. Another stringent clause Is the one demanding a 10x20 foot inside court, where formerly an air or pene trating shaft would suffice. The law will mean that more frame and brick residences will be erected than ever before. The housing law doe not apply to residences used only for one family and only applies to tenement structures. HOLLIE FAIRLY TICKLED WITH IT (Special to The Times.) Lafayette, Ind., July 17. Hollie R. Persinger, a well known newspaper man and publisher, who formerly lived in Lafayette. Is the publisher-compiler of a handsome booklet deluxe showing the wonderful progress made by the city of Gary In seven years. Mr. Per singer Is a resident of Chicago and it is aa Interesting coincidence that both" he and Mayor Thomas Knotts, of Gary, are former Lafayetteans. They lived here years ago and as Mr. Persinger writes to The Courier: "We were Lafayette boys together back in the Lingle and McGinley days of 18721876. The new publication which Mr. Persinger has turned out is being used to advertise Gary and is being sent to all parts of the civilised world by the Gary boomers. To show what Lafayette boys can do Mr. Persinger cites the fact that "Tommy" Knotts has cleaned up $250,000 at Garr and the fact that the publisher of the book was chosen from a list of half a dozen Invited bidders from Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit and other cities. "Lafayette sprouts and cubs are holding their own out In the world," writes the publisher. He also sends a copy of the Gary book which is a very interesting publication with some fine engravings.
