Krie aud Monon. A. M. Turner, one of the directors rtnd and boulevards gave the board iorr. good news when he informed it that Professor Ernest S. Tillman of the biological department of the Hammond high school had voluteered his services as an expert to superintend the spraying of tree in order to rid thein of the cottany maple scale, a pett which Is killing oft all the soft maples in town.

Professor Tillman in an interview with The Times on this subject said

he would be glad to lend his services,

because in the first place it would give

his students the practical experience

and secondly because he believes that his department is a public institution which should be made to servo the public in every way possible. Ha has other Ideas such as milk tests in the

He has worked them out successfully in other cities and his ideas on tree saving were approved by the board

last night.

The committee on parks was instructed to take the matter up with the

board of public works and the city

ERIE R. R. TOO

POOR; NO RAISE

According to J. C. Stuart, vice president in charge of operation, the Erie railroad is too poor to grant any increase in wages to engineers and train

men and therefore will not. For this

reason it withdrew from the confer

ence of eastern railways when these agreed, should the Newlands bill

amending tne israman act become a

law, to arbitrate.

Mr. 8tuart spent the night at the

Bluckston Hotel, arriving late from Milwaukee. He will leave at 7 o'clock

this morning for the East.

"It's none of the public's business why I am in Chicago or what the Erie

intends to do," he said last night.

The brass band at the carnival sought protection in the fire station and the nremen had an all-evening- conceit as a result. Seores of trees were blow down, chimneys wrecked, the power turned off, bushea uprooted and bill board destroyed by the high wind. Tha electrical display In the ehavens alarmed many. '

DINE ON FIVE POUND BASS Harry Sommers, manager of the Gary hotel, during Monday night's storm caught several large bass in Pine lake near Laporte. With Mr. Sommers were H. G. Hay, Jr., president of the Gary State bank, and Ingwald Moe. the contractor. The threa were caught in the heavy squall that came up suddenly and were it not for Mr. Bommer's skill at the paddle all three

might today be in heaven twanging golden harps and brushing up their wings. Four of the fish went to the Moe home while a five-pounder was carefully taken to the Gary hotel by Herr Sommers where it was served in state last night to the landlord and his guests, Pontus Heints, Alfred Jones, and Roy Parry. Messrs. Hay and Moe came around to the grill room to view the fish but they were allowed none of it although they piteously begged for only a crumb.

STORM DOES DAMAGE

TO GARYJPROPERTY The night of the big wind in Ireland

was recalled by George McGinnlty last

Tuesday night after supper time when a sharp blast from the lake stole his hat, sent papers and dust whirling down Broadway, and wrapped women's skirts about them. The same wind raised havoc with the 5Ioose carnival tents in Massachusetts street, blowing every last one of them down. Some of the dancers were caught in the rain with no protection but their dresses and their finery was ruined.

Through arrangements of several Gary men Riverview park, at Eist Gary, is again to become an amusement place. The young men have named their organization the Riverside Pleasure Club. 1 There will be dancing and other amusements every Wednesday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon and evenings. The first dance will be held Saturday night. Riverview Is & natural park and one of the most attractive spots In Lake county. Those who are at the head of this amusement place Informed a representative of this

paper that no effort will be spared to make their park a pleasant place t enjoy an outing.
