Graves led In the devotional exercises. Following the program a prettily appointed two-course luncheon was served. The social hour was spent very pleasantly. The hostesses at the meeting were Mrs. Shanklln and Mrs. J. J. Anderson.
A SOCIAL. GATHERING. Mrs O. "W. Hill entertained the members of the North Side Ladies' Club very charmingly yesterday aftrnoon, at her home, in Hohman street. There were eighteen members present, a number of whom spent the afternoon very pleasantly with their needlework. Music was also a feature of the after-

instead the members will picnic at the Lake Front. They decided upon the first Thursday in August for their picnic and anticipate, a very enjoyable day. A dinner will be served and there will be the usual picnic diversions.
A HAYRACK PARTY. The Epworth League of the First
Methodist Church will give a moonlight hayrack party Tuesday, July 15, to which the members and their friends are cordially Invited. All who desire to attend are asked to notify Miss Mabel Powley before Monday. The party will
leave from the church in Russell street promptly at 6:30 o'clock and go to the
Jarnecke home, in Columbia avenue, where a picnic supper will be served.

Margaret Draper. Mrs. William Draper of Washington is about to announce the engagement of her daughter Margaret to the Compte de la Tour D'Auvergne, a young frenchman. noon, then dinner, wash iha dishes and
help around the house till 9 o'clock
and then have two hours of swimming
and fishing, if there is nothing more
for you to do around the house. AfLe
you . come back you get the cows and
milk them, then eat supper, wash the dishes, fill the wood box and then
nothing to do till tomorrow.

Railroad men will watch with Inter est a test at Gary this month of a safe
ty rail, the invention of a "lifer" In
North Dakota penitentiary, who has
worked for years in the perfection o
the device. The rail It Is said, may revolutionise the manufatctuie of steel rails and eliminate wrecks caused by
defective rails. The first official tes
by railroads will be made at Gary by
the Soo railroad, which has become in
terested in the invention. F. O. Hell
strom, warden of the North Dakota penitentiary is responsible for the opportunity that was given to work out the convict's Invention. Several years ago he laid before Mr. Hellstrom the plan which he had in mind annd the warden gave him assistance in the matter of providing working materials. Chesterton Tribune.

BECOMES POPULAR People from all over Lake county are being attracted to Miller beach, the only lake front breathing spot for the territory east of Indiana Harbor. At the Lake Shore depot in Miller which Js in the heart of the sand dunes one gets a western impression when leaving the train. The traveler alights from the train to find himself In a dense sand dunes woods. Vsually waiting at the train is August Olson's stage coach which plies between the depot and Miller boari, more than a mile away. Olson picks up a good deal of side money operating his stage coach.
